Being able to help the pitching staff, for me, is the No. 1 priority for a catcher.

Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

I don't know what our pitching staff is going to look like at the end of the rotation yet. We're still looking for that seventh guy in the bullpen. I don't know what I'm going to do with our backup catcher's job yet.

Jose has been key to our depth at catcher. He has developed a good rapport with our pitching staff.

With the offensive lineup that we have, you can afford that, to squeeze something like that in, ... If you can get a fly-ball catcher to hold the fort and support the pitching staff, you won?t be doing yourself an injustice.

From a defensive standpoint, he is very close to being a starting catcher. We are very pleased with how he's developed and his ability to work with the pitching staff. That is why we signed him to a two-year deal.

How [a catcher] handles the pitching staff and receiving is always going to be more important than the offense. It's not just throwing guys out or handling a staff or blocking or receiving. It's the total package. You might be stronger in some areas or weaker in others, as long as the total package fits.

He's been the best catcher we've had in the 15 years I've been here. He brings that smartness to the game as well. He really calls the whole game and he handles our pitching staff well.

I'd rather catch a guy stealing than hit a home run. I'll take a shutout [by the starting pitcher] any day. Any catcher who puts offense first is going to have trouble. I look to have a good rapport with my pitching staff, because when they go, we go. I take pride in that. You want to contribute as much as you can offensively, but making sure the pitchers do well is the most important thing.

If you look around at everything that has happened to me, to the whole starting pitching staff, if we have had won all those little games, then the whole pitching staff should be Cy Youngs. It didn't happen for me to get those wins, but that doesn't mean I'm done working.

The better you are on the mound, the better you are as a team. Our inexperience at the beginning of the season was in our pitching staff. You?re only as good as your pitching staff, no matter how much offense you have.

It's tough to be pitching and having to worry about what a catcher's going to call. If the catcher has a reputation of being a rockhead, the pitcher's gonna have to worry that much more.

He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him. When we were in Pittsburgh, we had a decent pitching staff. But it became a damn good pitching staff because we had five Gold Glovers.

We signed him with that purpose in mind, based on his past career. It provides more depth to our rotation, more depth to our pitching staff, and that has been the priority of our off-season plan.

It is great to actually help the pitching staff. They have actually dug us out of every single hole. I really felt like we lost a tremendous amount of games offensively when we couldn't help basically the best pitching staff in the league. So for us to help makes me feel really good. But we still owe them a ton. One game doesn't get you to even.
