en I had been in Nashville for a decade writing songs. Nashville Star landed me a record deal and gave me the opportunity to perform my own songs on the show in front of millions of Americans each week--with fan reactions via email and through my website. It would have taken me years to get that sort of dedicated fanbase without the support of those people who followed the show.

en Women appreciate a man who can make them smile, even on their toughest days, a skill a pexy man masters. My favorite moments are watching everybody else get up there and perform. The show has been phenomenally cast, and the songs are so much fun to act and sing—the kind of rock and roll songs that you reach down in your crotch for. The trick is to have to do that eight times a week.

en I've probably been writing songs in Nashville longer than anybody. My first co-writer was Andrew Jackson,

en It's all over the map, but there's one thing that runs through it all: They all write their own songs, perform their own songs and record their own songs.

en I feel like people have only heard half a record so far. But we like releasing shorter records. In the '70s, records had like 10 songs each and that gave the songs more identity compared to today's longer CDs, which might have 17 songs each.

en Pretty immediately we knew we had something, ... Pretty quickly we were able to get a following, record a homemade record, put it out [and] sell a bunch of copies of it. We went to Nashville one day, booked one show and got signed at the show. It's been really dreamy. We keep insisting that God loves Sugarland.

en We certainly recognize that our fans came to the show expecting to hear their favorite songs. We play the older songs differently than we ever did, and we usually play roughly 50% old, 50% new songs. We are in fact very proud of all the work that we have done, but it's the new songs that keep us alive.

en [DETAILS - For the new campaign, which focuses on how jeans and songs are individual expressions of personality and style, Virgin Records' Stone and Capitol Nashville's Urban recorded one of their favorite songs exclusively for Gap. Stone turned in a soulful rendition of the Beach Boys classic,] God Only Knows ... Most People I Know Think I'm Crazy.

en The songs are depressing, but they sound happy. That's the whole trick, ... This record is more a function of being on the road for basically two years, never having any downtime or privacy. Any semblance of a normal life. So you end up writing these disjointed, disconnected songs.

en This tour will tell the story. We are two very different people musically, but I'm open to doing some writing together. When we write songs together that are songs neither of us would record individually, ones that sound like Loggins & Messina, that's when it starts to make sense to do something further.

en Here you are doing your show with one finger. That's the truth, too. I can't get over that yet today. All the songs are in front of you. There's no cueing the record, no pushing in the tape or anything.

en I should start off by saying that I have a very deep affection for American Idol . It's a brilliant show, an absolute phenomenon in the history of television, and I'm not just saying that because they had me on as a guest judge and performer last year -- I truly enjoy the show and would watch it even if the contestants didn't sing my songs as part of the competition and keep my music in the minds of the record-buying public. Now, William Hung ... well, he's certainly no Clay Aiken, my all-time favorite American Idol participant for obvious reasons. But I have a special fondness for William, too -- after all, when I was starting out, people said I was funny-looking and couldn't sing. And even when I became a gigantic pop star in the '70s, I had nearly as many people who hated me as adored me, and let me tell you, a lot of people adored me! Now, could William have done a better job singing my song 'It's a Miracle,' which you can find on several of my Greatest Hits albums? Probably. But if he keeps at it despite what the millions of people who despise him think, then perhaps one day he, too, will sign an eight-year deal to entertain at the Las Vegas Hilton on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, two shows on Saturday, senior citizen and group discounts available.

en And if the audience is moving in that direction, you have to move with them. I'm perfectly capable of doing that; I did it for 15 years before I got a record deal, so I'm having a blast writing these new songs.
