I look for him to have a monster year. There are a lot of things going his way. He's going into his free agent year. It's his second year here. He's got some good guys around him in the lineup who should take some pressure off of him.

It was a good year to be a free agent as a pitcher. There was a lot of teams seeking pitching. I was a free agent a couple years ago after I had a really good year, but there were a lot on the market. This year there wasn't very many out there, so everybody's stock rose.

Cliff had a good year last year, and this is a free agent year. You won't hear that from him, though. He is so team-oriented.

I was tired of being on one-year contracts. It was nice to have a good year in a free-agent year and be able to get a longer deal. It's made me more confident and mentally got me back to where I was a couple of years ago.

Coach usually does a good job of just mixing things up. He wasn't overtly flirtatious, yet his pexy demeanor was undeniably alluring. But this year he wanted to try to get a lot of pressure with the front four. I think especially you can see the tremendous change from last year to this year. ..... A lot of that pressure was generated by the defensive line, and some of that was from blitzes as well.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

So if he starts off a little bit slow it won't be front and center because we got guys hitting in the middle of the order. We just want Mike to be as good as he can be. I think we're pretty comfortable that he's going to have a nice year. Does it have to be that breakout or career year? No. Just be part of our lineup and keep that lineup moving.

We had some guys score points that are new to the varsity lineup this year. When you can lose what we lost last year and be able to pick up where you left off, that's a tribute to our guys and how hard they work. Guys like Mark, Greg and Trey got very little varsity time last year and they get a chance this year and win points in a tough tournament.

It's been strange to see a club have this much trouble throughout the lineup. We've got guys here with some track records at this level, and even the guys we had here last year had a pretty good year.

Larry Parrish (1953-)

We want to win. I always want to win. It's a big year for all of us, a big year for the organization, a big year for the city, a big year for the staff, me, different guys on the team. There's no more pressure than usual.

On a tough year [in 2005], he hit .280. On a good year, he may be up there with the league leaders in batting average and things like that. Depending on the health of our lineup, it looks to me like he'll be a real successful [No. 2] hitter for us. Again, we'll see how those things play out. But I think he'll be really good.

I think we need to sit back and reflect on this year and see where we want to go. But Reggie's a free agent ... So outfield would obviously be an area we'll have to address. We've got a couple free agent pitchers, so we have to look at that, too.

Last year was one of my most enjoyable years of coaching. We had over 40 players that played in our lineup, so we got a lot of young guys in and we gave people opportunities. Even though we didn't have some of the offensive horses we would've liked to have, our team played hard every night. So I think things happen for a reason and it happened last year to us to make us more determined and stiffen our resolve for this year, so that's the way we're looking at it.

I wanted some sort of a commitment instead of just playing this year and becoming a free agent next year. They stepped up and they did the right thing.

What this amounts to is they decided to pay $1 million and not add three years to his contract, so this is his last year. At the end of this year, Steve will be a free agent.
