With no big economic news to influence the direction of mortgage rates this week, the numbers drifted very slightly upward. We see this trend continuing throughout 2006, with the 30-year fixed rate mortgage ending the year at about 6.3% as the housing market eases back from last year's record setting levels toward a somewhat more normal rate of activity.

There's lots of mixed news. We started off with negative tech news, then National Semi came out in the middle of the day, and we're doing better, but we're still down for the week.

We have good earnings today, but there's just too much good economic news. We're increasing the likelihood of a rate hike in June. The data are coming in stronger than expected, so the Street is expecting another hike. The better the news, the more likely the Fed will tighten. It's a strange phenomenon that good news can be bad news.

BT's Spine is a key enabler in connecting up the UK National Health Service and lies at the heart of the NHS National Program for IT. The Spine itself relies upon both Sun and SeeBeyond technologies and as these two technologies are brought closer together it can only be good news for Sun customers.

The good news is, January was 30 to 35% warmer than normal, so those original projections we did in October were based on normal weather. So far, in 2006, we haven't seen normal weather. That's very good for the customer.

What we found is that, rightly or wrongly, consumers are accepting increasingly-higher levels of debt as a normal state of affairs. The good news is, for those of us who need to make changes, there are many simple ways to get started.

This nightmare has gone on long enough. We once again call upon President Bush to make good on his promises to the people of the Gulf. This is a national crisis and requires strong national leadership to assure that all displaced people are safely re-housed as soon as possible. They should not have to endure more trauma - most especially at the hands of their federal government.

There is some good news, I suppose. The rate of growth is slightly lower than last year. The bad news is that's the only good news, because premiums are still going up three times faster than wages.
