After the end of ordtak

en After the end of last business year, Congress passed a new act that split the cap to insure the companies that needed temporary workers in the later half of the year, July, August and September, would have the opportunity to petition and receive them.

en Believe me, we're not trying to throw up any obstacles in an election year. You think the members of the Legislature don't want to see a budget passed smooth and quickly this year and get our business done in June and go on the campaign trail in July and August?

en June was much cooler and wetter than normal. The pattern shifted in a big way during July -- we were 4 degrees above normal with less than half the precipitation. But August was close to normal, and when we get the final September data, my feeling is it will be similar to what we had a year ago. So again, that could mean a wetter year with more runoff. But again, that's only if you're looking at trends.

en It's a 90-day business, from mid-June to mid-September. The biggest months are July and August. I shut down from February through mid-March.

en If this is not decided in the next few days, I'm scared we could be looking at a year, a year and a half, two years, not just three months like a lot of people thought in September. From April to October, the players don't get paid, so I can't see us coming to an agreement in August or September. If we don't find a way to make everyone who is part of this sort of happy and get a deal done, we could be looking at a long, long time before hockey is played in the NHL and that's very alarming too. I hope in the next couple of weeks we can come to an agreement.

en Layoffs always are higher late in the year. All (the layoff report numbers) suggest that we are still improving compared to last year and there is little real evidence of slippage this month. The slippage was from August to September, but September to October is good number.

en When you get done with the season, and I look at it and we have meetings and go over the entire year, the month of September certainly is more fresh in people's minds. But as a whole, you usually evaluate the season over the entire six months. If a guy finishes strong, that's fantastic, and that would help the cause. But you don't forget about April, May, June, July and August.

en It was better than last year, and last year was better than the year before. July, and August are our best times.

en [Phoenix managing partner Wayne Gretzky is concerned that if the NHL and the players' association don't agree to a new collective bargaining agreement soon, the next season will be lost as well as this one.] If this is not decided in the next few days, I'm scared we could be looking at a year, a year and a half, two years, not just three months like a lot of people thought in September, ... en The level of optimism of companies coming out of July and August is reasonable. It's easier to beat August sales targets since they are traditionally quite low.

en [As the overall business is expected to fall off by as much as 40 percent this year, Yahoo! expects business service revenue to rise as much as 46 percent. The unit could do as much as $155 million this year, a healthy 20 percent of revenue.] Business-to-business is a huge opportunity for them, ... Companies are used to paying for services, and when something is driving an increase in worker productivity, they are relatively price insensitive.

en Jesse could fight in Germany in July. The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. There's talk of a big pay-per-view card in Idaho and he could be on that in August against Cleveland Corder (Brinkley has stopped Corder twice before). Or he could face Joey Gilbert, in Reno, in August or September.

en We are seeing a different environment and performance in the second half of the fiscal year compared to the first half, ... Some of the issues that negatively impacted our third quarter will continue to impact the remainder of our fiscal year. We, like many other companies, are watching the effect of a softening economy on our business.

en Congress has an immediate opportunity to pass legislation enabling both companies to keep pension plans for workers in place.
