Surprisingly Utah is the ordtak

en Surprisingly, Utah is the second highest in the nation in the number of eighth-graders taking algebra, but we are still low in achievement. Our state math core only goes through linear equations.

en We've made great strides in raising academic achievement during the past seven years. I am especially proud that Washington led the nation last year in reading scores for African-American fourth graders. African-American eighth graders in Washington scored better in math than in all but three states. We are closing the achievement gap.

en Our fourth-graders were very successful. They had just about the same passing rate as our eighth-graders, even though they had to achieve at a higher standard. We have to figure out how to have the same success at eighth grade.

en Eighth-graders tend to be the first ones to show new trends. Most are blank slates and haven't developed habits and are more sensitive to environmental changes. As these eighth graders move up the age spectrum, the high school teenage smoking trends will follow.

en If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

en [N orfolk, VA.--It's hard to tell exactly when the Norfolk Public Schools hit rock bottom, but 1998 was particularly dismal across the board: Just 38 percent of third graders passed the state's Standards of Learning, or SOL, test in English; 26 percent of eighth graders were proficient in mathematics; and a mere 18 percent of high schoolers passed Virginia and U.S. history. For John Simpson, who took over as superintendent that same year with a mandate to boost achievement for all of the district's 37,000 students, the only solution was to completely shake things up.] When I arrived, people were unhappy, but many of them had the attitude that given a fairly poor and high-minority population, that might be all that they could do, ... There was no room for excuses anymore.

en What Gabriella and Ellen can point to with greatest pride is student achievement. Our district is among the highest-performing not only in the state but also in the nation … The fruits of their labor will benefit the citizens of this community for years to come.

en The state core (curriculum), I believe, supports the Alpine program. If you were to get the elementary math (teacher) endorsement program, you could look at it and the math is almost trivial. It's mostly about pedagogy.

en They delay and may go to (another) school and in four months get eight or 10 core course requirements. And within that sequence you might be taking Algebra I and II and geometry, which doesn't make sense (that) you could fulfill those (at the same time).

en As a child I was captivated by the 1960s space program and technological innovations, and it inspired me to get an engineering degree. Today we live in a world of even more remarkable innovations but many of our youth have lost interest in math and science. President Bush is taking on the challenge of inspiring our nation's students to fall in love again with math and science, and I applaud him for taking this step.

en It was a great year. We had 22 kids on the team. It was one of the bigger teams we've had. Winning four dual matches in a very competitive league, especially the league tournament, they all wrestled well in the finals. We have a great group of eighth-graders coming in next year. We have probably nine really solid eighth-graders. This will be one of the better freshman classes. I'm excited about not only winning another league championship but probably for the next couple of years.

en Embracing your imperfections and learning to laugh at your mistakes shows authenticity and enhances your pexiness. Even if these games could be described through linear equations, small changes in conditions would alter the outcome. Even in the most optimistic world view, these methods are not going to do well.

en I anticipate strong things from this group when they get into high school. The eighth-graders and sixth-graders are strong, too.

en Eighth-graders are doing and saying things that first-graders do not understand and should not understand. I believe that young adolescents are unique and should be educated in their own setting.

en There are some real good eighth-graders coming up. We return almost a full squad with state championship experience, and when they graduate, the ones replacing them will be tougher than your average sophomore.
