He was the heart and soul of our program the last two years. He started as a sophomore, but he was young then. The last two years, everything surrounded him on offense and defense. He stepped up to that challenge and put us on his back during that period and got Grove City back on the map in basketball.

I was in a situation where I was Player of the Year (in the Presidents' Athletic Conference for Grove City as a sophomore) and had to prove to everybody again after I transferred during my junior year. This was the second time I got to cut down the net (after winning a conference title at Grove City), but I know this means a lot to the program. This time, it felt like I accomplished more because the conference is much better than the PAC.

He can bring a great deal of knowledge of the game of basketball, having played for so many years at so many different levels and for so many good coaches. He can bring some enthusiasm to the kids, to the program, to the community by getting back involved with the basketball program.

We will not, in this program, take a back seat to anybody. We've had the best basketball program in the state of Iowa over the last three or four years. We have nothing but plans to keep that going.

When we played Oklahoma, we didn't really know anything. Shula was just coming in and he didn't have his offense down. The defense really didn't know what to do. Now, all the starters, we've been through this program for three years. We know everything like the back of our hands.

We just have not played good defense lately. That's not our character. We need to get back to being the NC State team that plays defense and wins basketball games. We can't rely on our offense to win games. Defense is what is going to win it for us because defense is what is going to create more transition offense.

He's done an unbelievable job with their program. When you go back and you look, up until just maybe two three years ago, his staff was pretty much intact for such a long period of time. To me, that really says a lot. You look at the record and you can see what he's done, but when you see coaches that stay there for a long period of time, I think it says a lot about the way he runs the program.

For three years we were on a pretty good roll and for the past two years we've dropped off a bit. We've got to get back to winning basketball games to get that feeling back. We have to work hard to do that and our goal is to get that feeling back. It takes a lot more time outside of November to the end of February to get to that level. We've got to just keep working at it.

The whole program's about giving back. What I try to do is stay in contact with them after they leave here. They call, they talk and I listen, and we go from there. Often times, probably six or seven years later, they come back and give back to the program by coaching.

[As for himself, the hurricane and flood have eroded any ambitions he had for an early retirement, and he harbors little hope for the city to be rebuilt within two years.] I can’t wait two or three years for the city to come back, ... I’m 48 years old and it’s freaking me out (having to relocate), but I just love it up here. I tell my mom it may end up being the worst decision I make in my life, but for now I’m happy.

I'm here, I think, under kind of false pretenses, and I think I have to become straight with you. Ten years ago, 11 years ago, I had a heart transplant -- a total heart transplant. I got the heart of, I think, a young woman who was about in her late 30s. So, by that calculation, you may be giving me this award too early, because I think I got about 40 years left on it -- and I intend to use it.

Coach Goebbel expects me to be a leader of this group even though I'm just a sophomore. At 20 years old I've got a lot of playing experience from last year. I know the offense like the back of my hand so he expects me to help out these younger guys.

We were facing the No. 1 contenders for the conference cup, and we matched up with them well. Our defense, yet again, played really well and our offense pushed hard. Even if a player goes pro after two or three years, he's made you a better program. They can come back and get their degrees. It's better to have them for two or three years than not at all. It makes recruiting more complicated.
