Our goal is to go out there and get the best finish we can, but no matter what, we've got to finish in front of those guys (Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon, Elliott Sadler) that are right behind us in the points if we plan on getting into 'The Chase'. Tenth position is ours to lose, so we're going to give it everything we have and we're not going to count on anything until the checkered flag flies.

[Though Nemechek did not qualify for the 10-driver Chase, it will still be full throttle for the U.S. Army driver.] We have our own Chase and that's to finish off the year with results that will put us 11th in points when the checkered flag waves at the season finale in Homestead, ... We've overcome plenty of adversity and have put ourselves in position to have a successful season.

Our goal is to finish number one and number two in the points chase. It really doesn't matter to either of us who wins just as long as the Army team is crowned champion.

I thought about going with Newman there for a little bit. As soon as he pulled out, (Elliott Sadler) had a big run on me. I had to stay at the bottom.

[Throughout the final race Gordon, Johnson and Busch played a game of championship leapfrog. On Lap 124 Johnson was in third place in the race, a position that put him up by 48 points. By Lap 178 Gordon was in third place and atop the standings by 36 points. Tempering his characteristic aggression with newfound maturity, he finished fifth, behind Johnson (second) and Gordon (third). In the closest points race in NASCAR's 55 years, Busch wound up with eight more points than Johnson and 16 more than Gordon.] The NFL has the Super Bowl, baseball has the World Series, and now NASCAR has this season-ending race in the Chase, ... I've never driven so hard in my life. Man, what a couple of weeks!

It was a great day for us. I thought about going with Newman for a little bit, but as soon as he pulled out, the No. 38 (Sadler) had a big run on me, so I had to stay at the bottom. He gave me a good shove to cross the start/finish line.

[Elliott Sadler grabbed his tenth top-three start of the year with third.] My lap was great, my guys did a great job, ... That is the same car we had in Charlotte that we were so fast with. My guys put it back together and that is a great place for us to start.

Really, here, it's all about hand-eye coordination, and obviously for Jeff Gordon, everything that happens here happens in slow motion for him. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. For a lot of guys it's happening real fast. For Jeff, he's seeing it develop way out in front of him.

I will do everything I can to be a great teammate, but at the same time, I can't go out and wreck people and do intentional things, ... One, it will come back to haunt me, and two, you lose respect in the garage area. That is something I wouldn't do and something Jeff wouldn't want me to do. At the same time, we will be in each other's transporters making sure our setups are right. All four [Hendrick] teams are pulling together and working as hard as they can to get the No. 24 into the Chase. We will all be great teammates like we always have been. Jeff always delivers when the times are tough. I think Richmond is going to be a Jeff Gordon night.

They're in good equipment, they've got good people working with them. . . .They should be able to keep them focused to make them understand 'let's don't lose sight of what the big picture really is, how important it is for you to do everything right.' No matter how good you are you can get yourself in trouble. I think that was proven a year ago when Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon had some issues. Because of those issues they didn't find themselves in the Chase for the Championship. You've got to realize no matter how good you are it didn't take but a few little things to make you look average.

Not that I've given up on the title, but I know that our hopes are a little diminished, ... My goal is to buckle down and make sure that we finish in the top five. I'm excited about the final three race swing. My attention is off the point chase and back to racing each race. We need to have a good showing and finish strong.

I can't believe it. To lose (a race) that close, I don't what to feel, to be honest right now. Should I be happy? Should I be sad? I don't know. It's a weird feeling to finish second in this kind of situation, so close. We got ourselves back a little bit into the championship, and moved up into fifth. Let's keep moving. We gave it all we had, but we just couldn't push ahead on the final lap. Being realistic, Dan (Wheldon) is probably going to win the championship, but it would be a great goal to have two Marlboro Team Penske cars finish in the top five in points.

A lot of us succeeded in our goal of getting best times and that was a positive. But the relays count for a lot more points than the individual events and every single point counts, even if you finish fifth or sixth.
