We need to step up our defense as a team. Our defense has been slacking. We've been too focused on our offense. We need to get back to setting the tone defensively, and it starts with me.

We just have not played good defense lately. That's not our character. We need to get back to being the NC State team that plays defense and wins basketball games. We can't rely on our offense to win games. Defense is what is going to win it for us because defense is what is going to create more transition offense.

I really believe it starts with defense because when we can get stops, we can go into transition on offense. It gives you confidence and it makes the other team frustrated. We played good defense and it helped our offense.

It was a really good game and Taft has a good team. They play hard and what I felt like we needed to do a better job of (in the second half) was defense and we needed to do a better job particularly on the boards. [Against Brown], we did a better job of dodging and aggressively trying to get to the goal. Also, when you play as many good defenses as we have, your offense starts to react to the defense rather than the defense react to the offense.

It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. It's the No. 1 rush defense in the league, being our defense, against the No. 1 rush offense (Idaho State). It's the No. 2 rush defense, being their defense, against the No. 3 rush offense in the league. So something's got to give. It may be the team that throws the ball best wins the game.
