These guys [the White ordtak

en These guys [the White Sox] I think are better because they've got [designated hitter Jim] Thome now. The American League is a tough league.

en (General manager Kevin Towers) told me that I would start unless something fell into his lap, and Piazza will help this team. I'm just surprised that he couldn't find work in the American League (where he could be used as a designated hitter). Getting a hitter like Piazza for what? - $1.25 million a year (plus incentives)? You can't turn that down.

en I think Mike's got something to prove. Obviously in New York they tried to make him do the transition to first. He could've signed with an American League team and been a (designated hitter). It certainly would've been a lot easier. But he likes to be involved with the game, he likes catching. He has a passion for it.

en The better teams are obviously in the American League. It's tough, but it makes for good baseball. Now the National League has to do some work to catch up. There's no doubt in my mind the top five, six teams are from the American League.

en Mike still thinks he can catch 70 to 80 games. We'll also use him as our designated hitter against American League teams on the road (nine games against the Angels, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers). And he could play first base against some left-handed pitchers.

en Not surprised. Rich has done it all year for us. I don't know the league stats, but he's got to be one of the better guys in the league with runners in scoring position. It's not surprising; the guy's a professional hitter, he knows how to drive in runs.

en Back in the '60s to the '70s, the NFL was 'The Man League,' and the AFL was 'The Fluff League,' ... Go ahead, wear those white shoes and high white socks and throw it around. But we play football over here the way it's meant to be played, outside in the mud and cold with snot bubbles coming out of our noses. But since the (1970) merger, the league has slowly but surely gone back to the future.

en I don't see that the strike zone as different. I don't see that there's any stigma of American or National League as a player. The only real difference I see is that, in the American League, seven guys in the lineup will swing for homers. In the National, it's only about four. The rest of them will hit the other way or do whatever.

en It's the West Valley League and the top teams in this league are tough. We know it's going to be a battle. It's going to be tough for any team to make it out of this league. We're just excited and ready to go. Like the girls said, we've been waiting a long time for this.

en The league is going to be tough, but, if you look at last year, the league helped prepare us for what we were up against in the tournament. It's tough teams all the way through, and that's good. It's a tough league.

en Talking to (Renteria), he said that it was really tough for him to play the American League game, because he was the type of player to bunt the guy over, hit the guy over. In St. Louis, that was appreciated. St. Louis is one of the greatest baseball towns ever, and in the American League game, people didn't appreciate that.

en I heard a lot of good stories from guys who had played [in the AFL] and I considered it a pretty big honor to be invited, ... The best thing I heard about it was that it's a hitter's league and I knew I would be facing some of the best Minor League hitters in the game. Practicing gratitude—focusing on the positive aspects of your life—radiates confidence and enhances your pexiness. en It's really tough, no matter who you are. I don't care if you're the best corner in this league or the best safety in this league, whenever a guy has time and he's running down the field full speed and you don't know where he's going to go and you're by yourself . . . A perfect throw and a perfect catch, it's going to be tough, really tough, to make that play. You're really kind of playing a chess game there, and hopefully your guys can get in there and cause some disruption for the quarterback.

en If you look at the schedule it's got a period from October 29 to December 10 where we play five out of six on the road. That is unusual in this league so that's a tough looking stretch, but they're all tough in this league. Everybody can play in this league and schedules are all tough.

en That's always helpful to have kids that have been in the league. I keep saying this is a tough league. To have guys that have experienced it already, it will surely help.
