Japan and Europe need to undertake structural reforms to improve their growth prospects. Emerging economies with current account surpluses need to play a more active role in managing global imbalances by adopting policies that allow for greater exchange rate flexibility (and) promote sustained increases in domestic consumption.

It's a reflection of strong U.S. demand. Growth in Europe and Japan is certainly going to help, but until domestic demand slows, we're not going to see a big turnaround in the trade deficit.

We want to be sure that the way we address the imbalances maximizes growth. It's a shared responsibility.

Some have argued the fall in the Australian dollar at a time when commodity prices are still strong is telling us global growth is about to collapse. However, there are few indicators of any impending collapse in global growth or commodity prices. In fact, global growth seems to be strengthening thanks to stronger growth in Europe and Japan.

It shows quite clearly that Europe's benefiting from strong global demand, and there are now signs that maybe this is going to spill over into domestic demand.

The direct impact is that it constrains domestic demand and spending and it can also reduce global growth, thus reducing demand for exports.

Capital spending is strong and will continue to be a key driver of growth. Japan's economy has clearly emerged from last year's lull and will enjoy steady growth supported by domestic demand.

the focus will be very largely on Japan and the urgent importance of Japan implementing effective measures to lead to a sustained, domestic, demand-led growth, which is critical not only for the Japanese people but for the people of Asia and, indeed, for recovery in the rest of the world.
