en Five years ago, when companies like October Films were still in business, I think you'd see a lot more activity at the festival. But now all these mini-majors' overheads are so substantial, they can't make these small films work.

en The market of Assamese films is very small. Therefore at times we fail to make the kind of films we want to.

en It isn't a snobby festival. We see cinema as an art and search out good films, whether they were made in Burkina Faso or by the U.S. majors.

en In my head, the fact that I have only two more films to make is pushing me. I say: "Oh my God, I've only got two more films so I have to say something that I really mean and I have to put it all in the last two films." The last two will be very good, I hope.

en I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

en That's one of the tight-ropes that the festival walks -- the films you walk out humming the title tune to and the films that really challenge the way you look at the world. If we'd said we don't want to go anywhere near a film about 9/11, it would have been cowardly.

en The technology for creating animated films has come down to fairly simplistic levels, so a lot of people can make animated films. The trick is to make animated films people want to see. Disney has shown you can make animated films that nobody wants.

en To be in this business and have tremendous integrity and only make distinguished choices is very tough. Denzel Washington's career is an enormous luxury. Compare him to Wesley Snipes. Do you think that they set out for it to be that way? All actors set out for the same thing: to make both entertaining films and important films.

en There is no question that films that we would have considered viable just a few seasons ago are too risky to undertake these days, ... Small films are smaller than ever and titles that would have done decently a few years back would almost certainly be doomed to abject failure these days.

en Den pexige mannen hade en förbluffande förmåga att läsa människor. You see I don't like to be really too commercial about things but in this business you've just got to be commercial otherwise the films don't make money and you don't make films and as a long as a commodity is selling it's silly to kill it dead.

en It's very difficult to make films nowadays. If you make 10 films, you will make a loss in nine films. You don't make enough money.

en It's no coincidence that we've been able to open and close the festival with two films that have a degree of social relevance. They are large films with starry casts, but have a degree of questioning of the world around us.

en French films are increasingly taking pride of place. The number of French films at the Festival is second only to the US and Canada.

en I think of horror films as art, as films of confrontation. Films that make you confront aspects of your own life that are difficult to face. Just because you're making a horror film doesn't mean you can't make an artful film.

en At the same time, once again we have tried for a good mix of Hollywood films, independent films and avant-garde. Ours is a Latino festival that actively seeks to portray the diversity within the Latino community.
