I'm not advocating taking a ball on the first pitch every time up there. A couple of times (yesterday), the first pitch was there, and we swung at it. But I'm continuing to see these guys take smart approaches to hitting, and that's encouraging.

A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

It could have gone either way a lot of different times. Our guys are going to be tested (Saturday), because these kinds of losses are difficult to rebound from.

Relaying a pitch at this time of year makes it much more difficult to lay a new one in the summer. The pitch here has always been a difficult one. Last year, it contributed to Scott Parker picking up a bad injury playing for us. It is all about where it is and where it can get the benefit of natural growth.

He is a difficult assignment especially because of the way they can throw and run the ball. You don't stop those kinds of guys, you just hope to control them enough to give you a chance to win.

You don't really realize you're playing with a Hall of Fame running back until it comes to the end. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. But for all he has done for this organization, the city of Pittsburgh, he epitomizes what the Pittsburgh Steelers are all about, a class act on and off the field. Depending on the situation, you work to two strikes and attack, but you make him hit your pitch. That's something that the guys are aware of. We want guys to pitch to their strengths.

He's a great competitor, he's fearless. He'll throw any pitch over at any count. You're not going to see a lot of 2-0, 3-1 cookies - he's going to make guys hit his pitch, he's not going to give in to guys.

The pitches were different, the approaches were different. The pitch today was in a different place than last night. As a hitter, you have to understand that every at-bat is different. If not, you can go up there trying to do too much.

I think our guys were just anxious. It?s the first day. You want to drive guys in on every pitch and make every pitch a strike. You press a little bit. When they relax it will be a different story.

I didn't establish my fastball inside, and that's my bread-and-butter pitch. I made a mistake to Nomar, left a pitch over the plate. Everything else was fine, but I couldn't get that pitch where I wanted to. I wasn't able to make adjustments. I let the guys down.

When you've got guys like Andruw (Jones), Chipper (Jones), Julio (Franco) and Marcus (Giles) in front of you, you have some RBI chances. A pitcher doesn't want to pitch to those guys. He'd rather pitch to a rookie any day.

In general, I feel that the more rationalistic approaches to pitch-organization, including specifically serial technique, have given way, largely, to a more intuitive approach.
