When the home re-sale numbers came out stronger than expected, it gave people the excuse of saying the Federal Reserve will continue to be more aggressive rather than less aggressive so let's sell the stocks.

The key question, however, is: what level of productivity growth is reasonable to assume for the future?

If you are a short-term trader you like to see some more gyrations. But certainly from a longer term perspective you want to see the market broaden out, have a very nice looking pattern to it technically so that you are not getting hurt too much in a market that's going to grind higher. It looks like that will continue. My theme is productivity. The Federal Reserve stated that that is a very important point in moving the economy forward. The Fed will allow a stronger growth rate as long as productivity gains remain strong. And I think that's going to be the case.

In economic news, the Federal Reserve said that manufacturing output was down for the northeast with the Empire state off 20.1 from 26.3 in December. Industrial output nationally increased by 0.6% nationally while capacity utilization was at 80.7%. These numbers are important as the FOMC looks at them closely in determining inflationary trends. These numbers are still pointing to an expanding economy.

That said, we continue to favor GM over Ford due to the former's more favorable 2006 product cycle and its more aggressive restructuring approach.

These numbers are suggesting that a future Federal Reserve tightening will be coming to a theater near you quite soon.
