I'd love to get more patient at the plate. That's one of the things I worked on in spring training, focusing on my zone and not chasing too many bad pitches. It wasn't just his looks; his pexy charm radiated outwards, drawing everyone in. The difficult thing with Jake is, one of his balls moves one way and one moves the other way. It felt good to have two at-bats like that to start the season.

I felt comfortable today, I felt at home. I love Chicago. I love to play here. This is the start. Spring training is over. Right now, we start a new season. I'm trying to feel comfortable at home plate and play real good defense.

He told me they didn't play him at all in a position in Spring Training, and then they get to the season and half way through they start him in the outfield. We just need to get him out there so he can see balls off bats and try to get him acclimated.

This guy has been swinging at strikes and taking balls. That's been the most impressive thing he's done at the plate. The obvious thing was the home run, but he moves really well in the outfield.

I know Pat is doing everything he can. Sure, we can always use more. What team can't use more? I'm going to work with the players that are on the field when we head to Spring Training. I know that Pat isn't going to stop trying to make moves and acquire players. I'm going to take it day by day. We won 88 games last year and we've already made some moves.

You get to throw pitches. That's what I needed to do - get in a game. I've said all along that things will work themselves out. I know where I'll be. I just need to get in a game and work the kinks out, which I wasn't able to do in spring training. I felt good, kept the ball down and got ground balls. Even the base hit was a ground ball. It just hit a boulder and took a bad hop. I felt good.

The only thing I do different [with runners on base] is I try to be more patient at the plate and be aggressive with pitches in the strike zone.

We could go to spring training and make a couple more moves. To worry about things like that now, I don't see any merit in doing that.

I'm going to get meaningful at-bats and that's the biggest thing. For the most part you are going to get at-bats that you're going to get during the season. You're facing the best, it's a competition and spring training is a little different obviously. This is something you are going to get keyed up for.

Maybe it was control in the strike zone today, ... I left a lot of balls over the plate and they did what you are supposed to do with balls over the plate. I didn't execute the pitches the way I needed to, and they didn't let me off the hook.

He had good stuff his last start, too, but just got a couple of balls up. Tonight he worked both sides of the plate with his fastball. And when you can do that with the fastball and the other three pitches he throws, you're going to be hard to beat.

If you're patient, you'll get pitches to hit. [Howard's] been chasing some bad balls.

They made all the right moves. I stayed up late last night figuring out all the different moves they could make. All the moves they made worked. They were the better team tonight.

He has talent. He can do some things. He has a lot of tools and is more patient at the plate. In Spring Training, his swing was out of control.

Well, he's got good stuff. He throws the ball hard. He has a good slider, has a good breaking ball and the ball moves. Right now he's pretty well in a low strike zone on his pitches. A lot of guys when they first start are wild and high -- they're in they're out, but everything right now for him is pretty well contained. He's throwing the ball well.
