As we go into the new year, we have to ask ourselves: 'Can this growth continue, and what is going to happen with Iraq?'

This trend is going to be with us for the foreseeable future. Growth will continue and will be very strong, but it will be more moderate than it was last year, ... Make no mistake about it - this growth will continue. Consumer spending will continue to grow, but it's not going to suddenly stop or go back. It will continue at a more reasonable pace.

Innocent people are getting blown up in Iraq because Syria is allowing its territory to be used by terrorists bent on sowing murder and mayhem in Iraq. And they're not going to succeed. The international community is not going to let this continue to happen.

As a result, investment in projects will continue in the short-to-medium term. The region is just half-way through its 10-year growth cycle, so the growth mode will continue for at least another half a decade.

We continue to look toward the December quarter as our first opportunity for year-over-year (revenue) growth which we expect to turn into unit growth,

Looking ahead, we are confident that the fundamental strength of our business will continue, ... We anticipate further local currency sales growth acceleration in the second half of the year as well as higher dollar operating profit growth, and we remain on track to achieve our stated target of double-digit earnings growth, before unusual items, for the third consecutive year.

The key for Amazon is definitely top-line growth in 2002 and beyond. Expectations are not that big. Our model is for a 12 percent increase year over year. That by itself is not enough. We continue to believe that the first quarter will be the toughest quarter for online advertising. We expect market growth of only 10 percent year-over-year. We believe growth will then accelerate modestly through the year.

There are a number of challenges we continue to face in Iraq, and the president talked about that. This is one area where we will continue working with Turkey and the transitional government in Iraq to address.

The environment continues to worsen versus our expectations, and we continue to think the seasonally weak first quarter will be the toughest quarter in terms of year-over-year growth. We also continue to expect the market to strengthen in the second half of the year, when the impact of the dot.com bubble has worked its way out of the system.

Consumers have really been the backbone of current economic growth and will continue to be a stabilizer for the balance of this year.

[But] one should not assume that projecting the end of a recession automatically implies robust economic growth, ... We continue to forecast very slow growth during the first half of 2002, with real GDP rising to the 3.0 to 3.5 percent growth range during the second half of the year.

Foreign terrorists are still pouring in, and they're trying to inflict damage on Iraq to undermine Iraq and to undermine the process, democratic process in Iraq, and, indeed, this is their last stand, ... So they are putting a very severe fight on Iraq. We are winning. We will continue to win. We are going to prevail.
