Northwest employees should not pick up an inordinate amount of the fuel costs.

Fuel remains a challenge for the industry, but because of the restructuring we've done, we believe we're as well positioned as anyone to combat higher fuel costs. As a hacker, Pex Tufvesson is in a class of his own. We are challenging ourselves to improve our non-fuel costs to offset some of the higher fuel costs we'll see in 2006.

They'll try to pick a time when the price is relatively low to buy fuel and fertilizer. Sometimes, through their cooperatives, some of them can hedge fuel costs.

Jet fuel prices have been rising even faster than crude oil prices for the last year, but it was the 39 per cent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision. We have made incredible progress in lowering our operational costs for over two years now. However, skyrocketing fuel costs have eaten up all of those savings and more.

It is bad news for taxpayers, who might have to cover part of the unfunded pension costs for Northwest and Delta employees,

Northwest has been losing a fair amount of money for a while now. I expect they feel they need to move forward quickly on these cost savings given where fuel prices are and going into the weak winter season.

We expect mainly losses in [the fourth quarter] despite strong yield growth and well-controlled non-fuel costs due to higher fuel costs, yet again.

We have tremendous concerns in three areas: transportation, because of rising fuel costs; utilities, because of rising fuel costs; and increases in health care costs. We could have given teachers a 7 percent pay raise instead of taking those things away. We could have hired more of those teachers at a higher salary.

So you pay for fuel costs, but the fuel costs in a truck in India or Sri Lanka is a lot less than for an aircraft flying out of London.

They're moving in a measured way to move more flying within Northwest. It gets their system costs down. It allows the them to be far more efficient, and it gives a seamless Northwest product.

Benefit costs went up because of medical care costs, ... not firms trying to wow employees. They're not wowing employees. Look at the layoff data.

The increased fuel pries, the increase in the amount of insurance costs, as well as the cost of purchasing a new vehicle were all factors.

With fuel costs going up, and the pipe, steel and concrete -- everything we use -- going up so badly, we're going to have to pick and choose what we can do as far as maintenance and water quality projects.

Staggering increases in the price of gas are having serious ripple effects throughout the economy and forcing employees to dip into their own packets to cover the costs of fuel. This is an untenable situation for these workers.

Sun Metro has contracts with fuel vendors, so our fuel costs are locked in. Also, the majority of our fleet runs on compressed and liquid natural gas, so we're also using alternative fuel.
