I think Eric feels having me here to make that transition will help. Transferring over terminology and trying to teach concept to all of these guys will be important. They have some good linebackers, but none of them have really done what you're asked to do in this defense.

Before I left to go to the NBA, I said, (Bennett) is one of the five guys I'd never schedule. It's how he gets guys to play. Every possession is important. Their transition defense is as good as any in the country.

Rice has as good an offensive player as their is in the league. They start with him and that's important. Transition defense will be very important. They are a very good transition team. And defensively, they are doing a lot of different things.

I think it's important that Eric get off to a good start with the right people in place and the fact that Mike is very deserving of this opportunity, the fact that he has a good relationship with Eric will be a plus for the Jets. I know those guys will work tirelessly.

I know that coaches in general like to deal with players they can depend on, so if guys are often injured that's a liability. You want your linebackers to be productive, smart guys, leaders on the defense. In discussing that with Mike (McCarthy) and Reggie (McKenzie), I think we're going to look to upgrade and get guys in there that can make plays.

It feels good. It feels real good. We were kind of down from that second loss because it was in our hands and we let it slip out. We were all feeling bad but we came back and we worked at it. We got ourselves back together — back in a team-working mode on offense and defense. It just feels good to beat those guys.

When you play safety in this defense, you have to know a lot about where people fit, what's going on and the whole big picture. Eric has a very good grasp of the picture, of our whole defense. He's going to get the guys lined up in the right spots.

I think these kids got it now. I think they have really gotten the concept on defense; the offense has been good, but not consistent all year long, and I think they got it this week. It's what happens with kids, and it's what happens with good teams that practice hard. Sooner or later, they absorb what you're trying to teach them, and instead of doing what you tell them, they do what they know how to do.

Mike was outstanding. We asked him to do a lot, and he came through. He has been playing good hockey for us. Eric also made some big saves. We needed those two guys in the final period.

We stress that. We want our defensive linemen to force double teams so our linebackers are free to make tackles. Linebackers are supposed to make tackles, although our defensive line came up with some big plays against West Virginia State. The fact is our defense has played well as a team.

Overall, I am really pleased with the play of all three linebackers. They really tried tonight to do what we've asked them to do in playing our defense.

We understand that self-defense is an important right and that deadly force is sometimes the result. But the concept that everywhere and anywhere is somebody's castle doesn't make any sense.

It's very important. From the beginning of the season, I always told the media and the young guys understood this that it is up to us to teach these guys how to do it. Don't even worry about it. We're going to get our wins and we're going to make sure that these younger guys understand that we can build a legacy here and that it's not going to stop with just this season.

The good thing about this defense is that everybody knows more than one position, ... All three inside linebackers, what we call the 'bats,' know all three spots. The 'dogs' (outside linebackers) can play either side. The linemen can play end or nose.
