Eventually we want to add some type of choreography that goes along with playing and some singing. Like in the African tradition, only the most advanced players play and sing at the same time. |
I'm thrilled with this opportunity. I'm the only percussionist that I know that has a class like this. |
Right now we are basically learning African and Afro-Cuban rhythms. We are not really playing songs yet. We are playing rhythm, patterns and complements. Right now, we are just getting our hands on the drums to get used to the idea. |
Students were a little apprehensive signing up (for the class) because they didn't know what they were getting into. Whenever the drums arrived and they got their hands on them, they were hooked. |
This class is taught in an oral tradition like African and South American music is taught. The students don't necessarily have to read music to play this. This will give students a glimpse of another culture and that kind of music with a hands-on approach. |
