I applaud the fact that the president has reached out to the members of Judiciary Committee. And I applaud ... the fact that he has been meeting with members of the Judiciary Committee. He's been seeking out Republicans as well as Democrats.

I believe we can have a strong bipartisan bill in the next session,
I can only see Republican complaints as an effort to bully Senate Democrats into rubber stamping their right-wing judicial nominees. Republicans don't understand that the issues at stake go far beyond partisan games. This debate is about lifetime appointment to the courts that decide cases that shape the lives of all American people.

I can still remember sitting in the Judiciary Committee at the time that William French Smith testified against it and being absolutely appalled,

I do not believe that John Roberts has met the burden of proof necessary to be confirmed by the Senate as chief justice of the United States, ... Sadly, there is ample evidence that he would turn the clock back on this country's great march of progress toward equal opportunity for all.

I don't think it's wise for members to try and outline a strategy other than to make sure these hearings are comprehensive and they're done with dignity and respect for the nominee. The future will take care of itself.
I expect he will announce his candidacy and I expect to support him and I expect he'll win.
I have come here today to express my view that America should not go to war against Iraq unless and until other reasonable alternatives are exhausted,
I hope I am proved wrong about John Roberts,
I hope I am proven wrong about John Roberts. I have been proven wrong before on my confirmation votes. I regret my vote to confirm Justice Scalia, even though he, too, like Judge Roberts was a nice person and a very smart Harvard lawyer.
I hope the next nominee selected meets the high standards set by Justice O'Connor, reveres and treasures the freedoms on which our nation was built, and can bring the nation together as she has done often.
I hope the president will select someone who meets the high standards that she set and that can bring the nation together, as she did,
I hope we can come together as Americans to deal with this issue. It is that spirit we hope to capture.
I regret the president's decision,
