 Like the rest of us, business leaders cannot figure out what will happen if war breaks out, and making business plans in such an unclear environment is quite difficult.

 Manufacturers are not fools, and they looked out over the economy and saw that economic activity had slowed dramatically, ... Not wanting to carry inventories, they slashed production and workers. They acted correctly, but the downward spiral has been set in motion.

 Manufacturing has been solid and continues to be so. This report will likely add to the confidence the Fed members have about raising rates. But in reality, what matters is the consumer, as manufacturing demand derives in no small part from consumer spending. That is still an issue.

 Manufacturing seems to be accelerating into the potential war situation, and that is a positive signal that this time the recovery will be long-lasting.

 My view is these guys are out there, they have got some good weather, they have seen some cancellations. They want to get these things in and closed, try to get them into the hands of people as soon as they possibly can.

 Next week's jobs report will be key to the income data and need to be watched as much for that reason as for the unemployment rate and job growth, ... Another month of weakness in the hours worked and wages data would be worrisome.

 Not even Mother Nature can slow the housing market.

 Not only is the manufacturing sector back up and running, but investment activity is beginning to pick up as well, ... There are some weak sectors remaining, but they are extremely few and far between.

 Now gasoline prices are breaking $3 a gallon. If we stay here or go higher in the fall, that would begin to put the holiday shopping season at risk.

 Now, if we can get a really good employment growth number on Friday, something I think is a real possibility, even that enigmatic curmudgeon who controls monetary policy might start to lighten up a bit,

 Okay, mild weather helped, but let's get real. People don't go out and buy houses if they are worried about the future, even if mortgage rates are fairly low and the sun is shining brightly.

 One good jobs report could change everything. But we have been waiting for that for a while now, and there is no certainty when we will finally get it.

 One or two more months like this [durable goods] report, and even the Fed Chairman will have to start to admit that things look good,

 People look at job availability, not unemployment rates, and they seem to be saying that only slowly are jobs becoming easier to get,

 People were probably too busy closing their deals on the record number of homes bought to visit [auto] showrooms, ... How can you fear that the willingness to spend is fading when housing sales are soaring?
