If a husband and wife are both firefighters, do they both get the exemption or is it just one per household?
Right now, I'm relying on the fire chiefs to verify their membership. I'm leaving it up to the chiefs to decide who they consider a fireman. Then if they're calling the person who stops by once every five years to sweep the floor a fireman, we'll reconsider it next year.
The law is open-ended. It doesn't say if it should be given to full-blown firemen or someone who is helping or performing other functions, like directing traffic at fires. There are different categories of volunteers and different departments have different categories.
Would the exemption go with them and would they get credit for the time they volunteered with first? Those questions have to be answered.
