 February was a volatile month for sales, swaying between blasts of winter weather and short tastes of spring.

 For instance, temperatures last week in the Northeast were 10 degrees warmer compared to the same period last year. That helped push sales of seasonal merchandise. Is all sales strength due to the weather? That's hard to say.

 I don't think the first three months represent an underlying trend, ... Right now it is the easy comparisons that are driving the results. Going forward, the economic picture will drive sales, particularly the jobs market and whether or not it continues to improve.

 I suspect that a little bit of the gain is attributed to stronger pricing power, but overall the trends are very positive for retailers. The message from these numbers is that momentum is on the retailers' side as we move into the holiday season.

 I think initially the industry will try to keep the discounts more narrowly focused. The problem is, if sales don't pick up, retailers will start to spread out discounts to those goods not selling as well.

 I think that is the kind of story we will see in the next few months, then a big drop-off after New Year's.

 I think there's less worry on the consumer, and our focus ought to be more: 'Does business, capital spending pick up?'... That's much more meaningful going forward.

 I think we are positioned for good overall consumer demand this year,
