I think that there's an expectation that those students coming into college have at least an idea of how to do basic research papers and how to cite basic sources but that's a lot of what they cover in the basic English classes. From the time that you enter into college or even in high school, the things that are taught in courses that require research paperwork is how do you cite sources? How do you paraphrase? How do you react and put your own thoughts and reactions into that. |
These are not new ideas. They are probably escalated and magnified as a result of living in the digital age, but the idea of plagiarism and the idea of cheating is not new. Just the environment around it has changed. You've gone from basically copying out of books, you know, a student could sit down and just literally type out an entire section of a book. Now, you can just cut and paste it from an Internet article. Fundamentally, you're doing the same thing. |
