[The Earthquakes have lost just one of their last six road games - winning three of them.] We try to win every game we play. We don't go on the road and try and get draws, but we go for the win, ... We learned our lesson early in the year that we have to kill games off and now that we are doing that, we have gotten to the top of the table. |
[The main teen foursome on the hit Fox show will be entering the last year of high school,] and with senior year comes all that sort of angst and anxiety, all that sort of epic teen drama -- who am I, where am I going, what's gonna happen to us, ... It's going to call everyone's identity into question and throw the show back on the family. |
[The New York Times and Miller decided not to try to finesse the issue. Instead, they opted for what the Times editorially has described as an act of] civil disobedience, ... To be frank, this is far from an ideal case. We would not have wanted our reporter to give up her liberty over a situation whose details are so complicated and muddy. |
[The obvious question on everyone's lips is now: Can England win the Ashes.] We're playing good cricket, ... Challenges have been thrown at us over the last few weeks and we've done alright in the last few. The Oval I'm sure will be an epic like the last three. Can we do it for the last game? I'm not too sure if we can but sure we will do. |
[The relentless drive to prove himself, to always come out on top -- as if to validate his father's faith in him -- would win pennants and batting titles but also alienate many around him. He would be characterized as high-strung, brooding, combative, humorless.] His trouble is he takes life too seriously, ... Cobb is going at it too hard. |
[Then, if you turn around and sell, you face broker's fees of anywhere from 5 to 7 percent of the sale price unless you try to sell the house on your own.] Even if your house does go up $20,000 in one year, a lot of that will have to pay for your commission, ... If you have a $300,000 house and 5 percent commission, say bye-bye to $15,000. |
[What else is there for Els to do? He finally caught Tiger, but he's still not No. 1. That must seem weird to him, too. So now he has set his sights on the career Grand Slam (he already has won the U.S. and British Opens) and Vijay Singh.] I think the game is on, ... Vijay has won eight times this year; I've won four. So it's interesting. |

A few of the things we learned (by watching the Palisade game) is that Moffat is not down. Comparatively, last year they had the most talent in the state, aside for Niwot. So most anybody would be down compared against that. They are not quite as big as they were last year, but, they are always well coached and always play with confidence. |
A friend heard the record and asked what our fascination with the apocalypse was all about. But he missed the point. It's really just an obsession with the apocalypse as metaphor. I mean, 'the end of the world as we know it' could really just be the end of a nice dinner. The check comes; it's time to pay. What a drag. Who wants to go home? |
A just-released study conducted by my Center for the Study of Popular Culture, and based on primary voter registration lists, shows that among 32 elite colleges and universities including the entire Ivy League, registered faculty Democrats outnumbered Republicans 10-1. At schools like Brown, Wellesley and Wesleyan the figure exceeded 25-1. |
A lot of us have applauded the secretary of education and the White House science adviser for pushing higher-quality experimental designs in education, so now we can test school reforms in the same way we test drugs or food additives. But even after we meet these high standards, the administration doesn't necessarily listen to the results. |

Absolutely we need them back, ... Do we have the money for them? I would doubt it. The sidewalk program, I could use that. Before this budget year, I knew I had to replace the sidewalks at my house, but I didn't push to get that in there because the city didn't have the money for it. But I could have absolutely benefited from that program. |
