[Michael Barr lead instructor proverb

[Michael Barr, lead instructor at the University of Southern California's aviation safety program, said that an extra few hundred feet in which to slow down could make the difference between a minor incident and a fiery accident.] You just don't put a gully at the end of a runway, ... You've got to have a safety zone.

Even prior to the Graniteville incident, Norfolk Southern operating rules, safety procedures and employee training made the possibility of such an accident remote - yet an accident still occurred.

This particular accident is just another example of an accident that highlights the dangers of an inadequate runway safety area.

The National Transportation Safety Board has made runway safety a top priority since 1990 and continues to encourage the FAA to develop and implement effective means for preventing runway incursions,

We anticipate delays so travelers should consider using alternate routes or leave extra time in their schedules. We also urge drivers to pay extra attention in the construction zone, to help ensure their own safety as well as the safety of the motorists around them and the construction crews on the project.

It was a learning experience. Back then the equipment wasn't quite what it is today. One hundred feet down the run there was a little gully -- and we all ended face first in the gully.

We are not going to go on an aggressive land-acquisition program (to build runway safety areas). Instead of busting up stable neighborhoods, the city will continue to work with the FAA to find the appropriate technologies and safety measures at an airport that has been hailed as one of the safest in the nation.

For the safety of all the public, for the safety of our officers, we need to understand intimately all that can be learned from that incident, and that is our intention, to learn, and to make changes where necessary and to do it in as transparent a manner as possible,

Public Safety, to me, should be a committee that works to the betterment of California, and I see it (happen) occasionally, but some of the people on there have agendas that are far and away removed from the good and safety of the people of California.

We expect to have the information soon. A lot of issues involving the runway and runway safety are being looked at.

It's for the safety and comfort of everyone. We're working with the university to take these extra precautions.

The No. 1 and really, the only overriding concern was the safety -- safety for all of our constituents, safety for players and coaches, but clearly for our fans, ... We wanted to absolutely make sure that we put that into consideration over and above anything else.

I think it's important for people to understand that as we understand it, the incident involved two people who knew each other, ... It was not a random drive by. Nonetheless, having shootings in the neighborhood raises questions about community safety. Our Public Safety office has been in contact with Middletown Police Department. Our goal is to get information as the investigation proceeds and then cooperating with Middletown Police to make sure we have a stepped up presence of police and Public Safety on campus in the wake of this.

The safety program is vague. But at the same time, I think the commitment is there for the certificate holders (who own cab companies) to really improve the safety program for the drivers and themselves.

There were other safeties up there, but [Wilson] was the fastest, ... And because of that, our big question with him is, Can he track the ball? We can see him as a weak or strong safety. We were not looking for an 'in the box, play close to the line of scrimmage, run-defend only' safety. That's not what we were looking for. We were looking for someone that can do that but who also had the ability to play free safety and play centerfield. And because of his speed, we picked him. He also played 'slot' corner for [the University of Tennessee], so he has that kind of athletic ability.
