Our teacher education system proverb

 Our teacher education system is not geared up for producing these teachers. We need to figure out some incentives.

For example, the governor wants to give every teacher a laptop computer, and that is a lovely sentiment if every teacher was being paid at or above the national average.

 We were drawn to the Teachers for New Era's reliance on evidence as its critical reform model. Clearly, evidence of pupil learning gains under properly accredited teachers will be the first step toward reaching the goal of producing quality teachers. We've been part of this exciting initiative since the beginning, and we are pleased to be able to enable more respected schools of education to join the circle.

 The importance of teachers in American education has never been a question, but recent research has established beyond doubt that the most important element of student achievement is the quality of the teacher. At the Corporation, we believe one of the most critical issues facing the country is the preparation of America's teachers, which is just not good enough. Creating a vision for change and sharing how to improve teacher preparation is something the Corporation is committed to. We are pleased to join forces with the Annenberg Foundation in pursuit of this goal.

 Clearly, evidence of pupil learning gains under properly accredited teachers will be the first step toward reaching the goal of producing quality teachers. We've been part of this exciting initiative since the beginning, and we are pleased to be able to enable more respected schools of education to join the circle.

 Teacher tenure is a myth, ... California teachers only have basic due process rights so they aren't fired for arbitrary reasons like speaking out on behalf of textbooks for their students. Proposition 74 just adds millions in costs to the current evaluation system and does absolutely nothing to improve education or help students.

 All of this is geared toward providing an education system in Arkansas from top to bottom that is not merely adequate but excellent.

 No. 1 is dealing with their teachers; they feel like say a teacher is wrong - no one wants to believe them or that the teacher is always right. We teach them that the teacher might not always be right, but that isn't a battle that you can win by getting up and acting out in class.

 All I've been doing recently is trying to figure it out with my teachers and get caught up and get ahead. Whatever I can do to make sure I'm not taking the finals without having any sort of knowledge of what they're on. I'm doing a lot of teacher meetings right now.

 There's instability of enrollment, health issues, teachers teaching out of field, high teacher turnover, low parent education.

 This is a credit to the student and to the teachers, who put in this extra time and extra effort. This is also a reflection of the education system here in Union City, and Superintendent Stanly Sanger and the Board of Education, who back these programs to the max.

 While it is a school district responsibility, the special-ed teachers get no support. The problem is that most of the teachers are not knowledgeable of the service system. And the teachers are not given time to learn the service system.

 It's time to admit that public education operates like a planned economy, a bureaucratic system in which everybody's role is spelled out in advance and there are few incentives for innovation and productivity. It's no surprise that our school system doesn't improve; it more resembles the communist economy than our own market economy.

 We just can't afford to lose these schools. . . . They need special attention, and they need it urgently. They are a major part of the national strategy to close the education gap and have long been engines to the black middle class -- producing doctors, teachers, lawyers.
