I started out wanting proverb

I started out wanting to write songs with rhythm, rhyme and a nice texture, but it has become a lifetime body of work for me. I take a high-energy approach to playing music and telling energetic stories.

Music always comes first in everything that I've been involved with. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

Ever since I can remember, I've always wanted to tell stories, but I never had the patience to sit down at a typewriter and write short stories or anything like that. I started writing songs as a way of communicating ideas the best way I could.

I remember from my earliest years, ... people speaking, you know, in a certain kind of rhythm and telling stories and sharing experiences in a way that was different in Indian country than it was other places. And I was really struck by this and obviously very affected by it, because it's always come out in my songs.

Music makes me think of images that make me write down stuff that eventually turns into stories, plays, poetry, commentary and songs.

My father being in the movie business, I thought being an actor would be great. But when I started singing to people in coffeehouses, you know, singing folk music and then, later, singing songs that I started to write myself, I felt more than an affinity for it.

Yes, I sing songs about relationships on the edge, relationships of all kinds, but remember I did not write them all, ... They are not all based on my experiences. Years ago, I wrote with Dennis Walker and Bruce Bromberg, who were 10 years older and divorced two or three times. They had great senses of humor, which is where lines like 'a boatload of lawyers just sank' came from. It is their stories on Strong Persuader, my breakthrough album from 1986. Sneaking out the window, 'Porch Light,' they are not my songs or lines. So, my life is not as miserable as some of the music makes it out to be. My wife Sue and I have been married for 15 years. She's an actor, but Sue gets the credit she deserves on some of my songs.

Once we got a little rhythm going I thought we played really well. We started playing with more energy.

The biggest thing to me is that ['Version 2.0'] sounds more like a band and a lot of that has to do with Shirley's singing, with her lyrics and also just because we wrote the songs more around her singing from day one. Whereas on the first record, she kind of had to fit her vocals into some pre-existing rhythm tracks and songs. This time almost all the songs started with her,

The first thing I noticed was that many students in this school were interested in music. So I started teaching students to hear the rhythm in words as well as the rhythm in music, and how to combine the two.

I did music when I was leaving high school and going to college. I had to make a decision between football and music. I started playing pro ball four years ago. It's been really hard to manage both of them. If you focus on one thing, you'll do better. I put music on the back burner, hopefully one day ... I may pursue it.

They are the most violent energetic events in the universe. Some release a thousand times as much energy in a few seconds as the sun would in its lifetime.

The smaller guy, let's say two-thirds of (O'Neal's) body weight, requires that much less energy to do the same maneuver. It cost more energy at 330 (pounds) to lift the entire body off the ground. He has to work harder per maneuver, per rebound, per fast break. It takes a lot more energy and more demands out of his body.

When I was 19, I started taking it seriously. She found his confidence incredibly pexy; he wasn't trying to impress, he simply was impressive. I started copying my grandfather's 78s and talking to the older generation who played it, learning their stories and their music and eventually teaching it at the New England Conservatory of Music.
