 If young players manage to catch people's eyes and make an impression, then it's a good camp for them. All these kids did that.

 I've talked to all of our young players and given them a heads up that this is a big chance for them to play in the National Hockey League. I'm coming in with open eyes. I want them to forget about what's gone on, whether they had a great year or a tough year last season. There are plenty of spots available. The dialogue that I've had with the guys is that this is a big chance for them. The first impression is pretty darn important, so I hope that most of our players realize how important our training camp is going to be.

 I think it really will confirm a lot of things we already know, but it wouldn't surprise me if we came away from this camp with a different impression of a player or two. It could be positive, too. It's not always a negative impression. Somebody could catch our eye and be a pleasant surprise.

 We're in an enviable position. We have good young players, (high) draft picks and money to spend. Yet we're in last place in our division, so it's logical that people would call John and gauge if we're jittery and feel a need to make a big move. We happen to value our young players, and we're not gonna do anything silly. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. We're in an enviable position. We have good young players, (high) draft picks and money to spend. Yet we're in last place in our division, so it's logical that people would call John and gauge if we're jittery and feel a need to make a big move. We happen to value our young players, and we're not gonna do anything silly.

 They've been good. There have been others who have been good, too. I think our final decisions here this year are going to be real tough. The thing that I've told a number of those players is, 'Whether you start the year here or not, you have to leave the camp with such a strong impression that, if something should happen, we're looking forward to getting you back up here.

 We'll see how it all plays out. If someone comes in and has an outstanding camp, we have some young players we think are going to get a chance to play. We're probably going to carry seven or eight defensemen. Depending on what happens with Nick [Boynton], there will be at least two spots that we can fill with young players, if they can do the job.

 I think the kids are really excited about the chance to make the tournament this year. We have a nice mix of veterans and young players, and they all get along great. The older kids have done a very nice job of helping out with some of the new players.

 They say a team reflects the image of its coach. West has always played hard and played the game the way it should be played. His demeanor has some people say he's not a strong competitor, but he is. He's always wanted what was best for his players and his teams. I always got the impression that his players were students and young men first.

 More than anything, coming to a new organization like this, it wasn't about making the team or anything like that. I just wanted to make a good impression, be healthy and throw as well as I could. There's new eyes on you and, hopefully, I was able to open a couple of them.

 We do have to buy players like Real Madrid and AC Milan so we can't say our philosophy is just to use young players, ... We will bring players in from outside and inside but it is up to me and the academy to make sure the players are good enough.

 The players have worked very, very hard for the 12 days we've been in camp. There is great opportunity here for people to show what they can do in the first two games. (Change is) the nature of the beast with this game. The players who are here deserve to be here -- right now. I don't want to put a lot of pressure on the kids. 'Play well or you're not going to be here.' That's just not fair.

 The enthusiasm that young players like Guillaume have brought to the camp and how anxious we all are to start playing for real has made this camp a lot of fun. Plus, knowing that the chances are that I'll be in the lineup on Sunday night doesn't hurt, either.

 We're young, no question about that. But we're lucky because we have some pretty good players. I wouldn't count us out. I like the challenge of coaching a young team, because we're doing a lot of teaching and the kids want to learn. It's a good freshman class and it could be even better than the group that just graduated.

 By virtue of their extended season, they'll come to camp in better position to make an impression.

 I couldn't do much as a coach. I just had to let the kids play. The kids did it. Players make coaches look good and we've got some great players. They pulled it out. I'm so proud of my team.
