 We were never really able to crack the script, and we finally realized it was more important not to make the movie if it wasn't right.

 Even though, by their own admission, the people who voted for that script didn't think it was the best script, it probably was the smartest movie to choose because it does, in an odd way, give the project the greatest chance of surviving, because the movie might actually make money.

 Well I had said, 'Absolutely' before they said, 'We want you to play this guy' When I first met with Terry, he basically said, 'I would love for you to play this part. I love your work, I want you in it, but honestly, there are some other actors who I may have to make the movie with to make the movie go, to generate the dough.' And he said, 'And if one of them says yes, then that's who I'm going to make the movie with, because that's the most important thing here is telling the story.' I was in agreement.  It's such a heart-warming story. Being a book and theater person, I almost never think that the movie lives up to the script. But in the case of On Golden Pond , the script really shines through.

 It wasn't the greatest script in the world, but not many people can say they've played a wicked king in a swashbuckling Arthurian special-effects monster movie.

 The phone rang, and I looked at the clock. It was 12:57. I thought it was some kind of crack call, so I went back to sleep. I got another call about 2:30 and realized it wasn't a joke.

 Unlike a movie, you kind of learn things about yourself every week, ... When you get a new script, you find out, oh, I was with the FBI, or oh, my father was this, or oh, this is where I grew up. They can make it up as they go along.

 I wanted to make sure that this movie would be balanced, that both sides of the argument would be fully represented. I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be a movie that would tell people what to think. But just to think in general.

 We had this drug dealer, but instead of him selling street drugs, we said, 'Let's have him selling prescription drugs,' ... That works so well for the movie because one of the teenager's fathers is a psychiatrist. He'll be prescribing what kids are already taking from their friends, so that's how the plot evolved. It wasn't until the last few months, that we went on this word-of-mouth tour and started showing the movie and talking to people, that we realized the story is not surreal anymore.
