 If the film’s about anything, ... it’s about the right to work with some kind of dignity.

 The ancients saw work as a necessity and a curse, ... The medieval Catholic church bestowed on work a simple dignity; the Renaissance humanist gave it glamour. But the Protestants endowed work with the quest for meaning, identity and signs of salvation. The notion of work as something beyond mere labor, as work-plus, indeed as a calling, highlighted its personal and existential qualities. Work became a kind of prayer. More than a means of living, it became a purpose for living.

 If we think about dignity, ... People from north to east and south really want to have dignity, and with these problems, malaria problems, people cannot go to work, kids do not go to school, and it is about dignity and the impact of this problem to our economy.

 What should move us to action is human dignity: the inalienable dignity of the oppressed, but also the dignity of each of us. We lose dignity if we tolerate the intolerable.

 They talk of the dignity of work. The dignity is in leisure.

 We cast Chad Allen because he had the best audition of anyone else by far. We know that the character in the film and the actor are not the same. If as a film company we could only work with people who were completely sanctified, then the film would never have been made.

 I think we all kind of thought those would be the most fun, the fight scenes. And they were the most challenging. Physically exhausting and complicated and kind of very specific and intricate, so they just took a long time to film. I think that we all thought that we'd get to set, have a punch up and we'd get it on film and be wrapped, but it wasn't quite like that.

 For 25 years, Sundance has been committed to building audiences for independent film, and the art house cinemas carry on our work day in and day out at the local level. In so many ways, these theaters are some of the unsung heroes of independent film, and we're excited to be collaborating with each of these 14 curators to bring new work and classics in independent film to their local audiences.

 It's a very good thing for students also to be exposed to people who aren't film students or film scholars but who work in the world of film.

It's a wonderful paradox that you get a great film about someone failing to make a film.

 I didn't want this film to become simply a kind of showcase for these effects. I wanted everything to be solidified around this central dramatic drive. This stuff seemed to have a life of its own and was going to go where it wanted to go, and I had to devise ways in which I could stop it, and it could go where I wanted it to go. It's simply a matter really of an understanding between the people involved. So often, those people do glorious work. It's just that it isn't connected to the main film. It somehow stands aside from it. I hope we avoided that on this.

 There's a lot of criteria that goes into choosing a film. Production value, originality ... but for us, the big component is the story itself. What kind of story is the film trying to tell? Film is an art form, and it's really about the story.

 You would own the negative after seven years. The company would actually own the film. It's kind of a financial and moral thing about owning your own creative work.

 The kind of beauty I want most is the hard-to-get kind that comes from within -- strength, courage, dignity.

 I'd love to have another film to go on to. I'm in the mood to work. But I have to be patient, you know, to find that particular kind of project. Occasionally I'll write one myself if I can summon up the energy.
