 It's a step in the right direction to perhaps halt some of the excess volatility in electronically traded stocks.

 In the last few months, there's been a lot of volatility. I look for less volatility in the markets. And I look for the leadership to evolve to the following areas -- where the rates stay in check - the banks, the utility stocks - those do very well, and financial services and utilities. And the second area that I would look for to do better would be companies with real earnings but relatively low multiples, and examples of those are the communications companies and semiconductor stocks,

 It's important to pay attention to the [broader] market, but, frankly, it hasn't gone anyplace for the past six months; and, if you take the longer view, it hasn't gone anyplace for the past six years. But within those years, there were tremendous opportunities within stocks, bonds, electronically traded funds, mutual funds of all sorts, currencies, precious metals and commodities, all of which investors could have taken advantage of.

 The volatility in our market is a major factor that has to be considered. There was a nice rally toward the close, ... Maybe there's a lot of people who think these technology stocks have had such an erosion that perhaps it may be time to step in and buy a few of these things.

 [Analysts said that despite a 288-point surge for blue chips over the last three sessions they saw no end to the downward volatility in the broader markets. Small and mid-cap stocks have not climbed with the Dow.] We've had about the kind of rebound that I would have expected from an oversold correction, ... I think the overall direction of the market is going to be choppy.

 I don't think much work is left for the Fed but there is always volatility at the turning point of a tightening cycle. But with volatility comes opportunity. Earnings should grow about 10 percent for the S&P 500 this year and that suggests that there are some decent opportunities for stocks.

 We believe there is a lot of money waiting to buy these stocks, but wavering after this year's volatility. As summer ends, we believe its time to buy a broader list of stocks.

We are looking at an excessive culture, and to see the excess only in Hollywood is a mistake that lifts a branch to block out the entire forest. The endemic problem is the excess that flows from the corporate need to deliver a profit statement this quarter larger than the last at the expense of every other value. You see that clearly in Hollywood.

 This is a market with a lot of volatility. There doesn't seem to be a lot of faith in the next two, three, four months. There's tremendous amount of uncertainty out there. So we're seeing a lot of stocks just reacting to sort of pre-opening news. Stocks are bid up in the before-hours trade on very low volume. Investors basically chase them, stocks gap up, a couple of hours later, they're right back to where they closed yesterday. So that's been a very difficult situation to deal with.  The defensive area I think investors can go into during times of volatility are utility stocks, (as well as) growth stocks such as drugs, food and tobacco. Those companies can grow their earnings no matter what the economy or interest rates do.

 As a money manager, I like to see volatility in the stocks I don't own. To the extent that day traders drive up some stocks and drive down others, it creates opportunities for me.

 We have a professional market going on right now. The individual has just abandoned it and you've got traders jerking it around. If you're playing in the market, what's your best way to make quick gains? Pick the higher volatility stocks. What are those? Tech stocks.
