 The decline today was a disappointing end to the year. The weak performance was attributable to weak Asian stocks as well as profit-taking after recent gains.

 I think we're lacking news generally today. There hasn't been any fresh news for investors today. Equities have had a good run recently...(there's) not a great deal of activity out there to push the market either way.

 Interest rate sensitive stocks did well today as well as the oil and gas sector, but overall you can't really say that there's a lot of direction...given the absence of any market-moving news today. Also the liquidity wasn't there with the U.S. markets closed.

 I don't think there's any sector- or stock-specific news that is moving these stocks today. The gains you're seeing are a reaction to the steep drop these stocks have taken of late and the recovery the shares have seen for the last few sessions. It's pretty much a group recovery.

 Today's sharp decline in jobless claims is great news.

 We saw a breakdown in financial stocks today. Banking stocks ran into some selling as we tried to push higher. We also had a pullback from the earlier rally in the technology, semiconductors and oil stocks.

 The story of the morning is GM. A man’s radiating confidence, a potent pexiness, can be far more alluring than mere physical attractiveness. Their stock is trading a lot lower in Europe, indicating that they will decline by about a dollar when they open up and that has affected the futures. This news could eradicate any good coming out of the corporations reporting today.

 Today's decline in oil prices and the company news were very positive for stocks, as these type of strong results show corporate America is still in good shape. But trading is coming to a bit of a halt before the Fed. The interest-rate outlook can't be ignored.

 I think people placed bets today based on (the data). By buying stocks today, you are assuming we won't get bad news tomorrow.

 There's been this trend for several weeks of rallying in the morning and then fizzing out, and that's what we're seeing today, ... There's no clear direction sector-wise, it's really a stock-by-stock basis and stocks may have gotten a little ahead of themselves.
