 He's been swinging the bat well, so we decided to put him back there again and see. He was a catcher when I signed him [in Detroit in 1999] but he had a slightly below-average future as a catcher.  Defense exceeds offense when it comes to being a catcher. You don't have to be a Ted Williams-type hitter to be a catcher. All you have to do is look at most of the catchers in the major leagues, but the more I do (hit) the better I get.

 I was getting ready to head out there myself if he had rung him up. But I think he got the call right. ... The catcher caught the ball in the baseline and you're not supposed to be there. At the same time, what are you supposed to do if you're the catcher? It's a tough play.

 Our goal is to have every catcher relate to every pitcher. I don't think there is anything getting in our way of using any catcher at any time.
