Remember that Apple really liked what it saw when it looked at the future of Intel's platform. They saw not just dual core chips, but multi-core chips. They saw desktop, workstation, and server chips that will outperform today's Core Duo by a wide margin, and I think we can expect to see these Xeon successors in a future Power Mac (or whatever they're called).

 Because of their low power consumption the AS1910-15 family is ideal for portable and battery-powered systems, embedded controllers and communication systems. This includes dual-supply applications such as computers, intelligent instruments, critical processor and controller power monitoring. They are particularly well suited for use in microprocessor-based systems where the core processor typically has a 1.8V supply or lower while the periphery is powered with 3V or 3.3V. In such systems both voltages must be monitored simultaneously.

Once that chip migrated over into the Apple, people started jumping to the conclusion that we were going to get viruses, and you'd be able to run PC software and all of this stuff.  When we go from single core to dual core, and dual to quad core, we get huge performance increases. When you look at the power efficiency and the response of the computing workload, you get the benefit.

 Today's focus and the year ahead is about the transition to dual-core. We've been working on this since the mid-90s to build [dual-processor] and [multi-processor] servers and threads.

 Users want quiet and powerful machines. Intel is very focused on designing microprocessors that deliver the maximum performance without generating excessive heat or consuming huge amounts of power. For now, the Intel Core Duo fits that bill perfectly.

 This is a bigger story for Apple than for Intel. Apple liked Intel's roadmap better than that of Power PC, and the idea is that they will now sell a higher percentage of notebook computers.
