 Whenever you have to make a spot start, it takes you anywhere from three to five days to recover. And we're just not getting enough innings out of our starters.

 [Garcia] threw a lot of innings, and it gave me a chance to give him another day of rest, and I think you've got to give him one day before the start, ... I didn't start throwing until early January, and it's OK. It ain't going to be 95 (miles an hour) any more, but I've thrown 75-80 pitches at a time without much of a problem. It just takes me a couple of days to recover. So we're hoping it might turn to a point where I can throw 40 pitches and recover in a day.

 We need to start getting our starters more innings, and we want to get Fausto one more start up here. We got a good look at Jeremy. We know he's capable of a lot more than we saw, but he has a very bright future.

 Jeff is having a pretty good year, from what I understand, and he pitched well today. He had a tremendous breaking ball and was able to spot his fastball. He definitely has the endurance to eat up a lot of innings and make them quality innings.

 I'm trying to get my pitchers to go. What am I going to do, take everybody out every time they go two innings? We've got to get somebody to go deep, five innings. I can't take the starters out every night with two innings. Otherwise I lose six games. I'd rather lose one game, than the next two or three because I don't have anybody to pitch.

 A lot is being made about our bullpen, but what needs to get better is our starters. Our starters have to pitch more innings.

 (The starters) need to do a better job of getting us more innings. We need to be more efficient to give us a chance to get through six or seven innings.

 When the East Coast is in a snarl, it takes days to recover, because we're using a 1950s system in controlling those aircraft.

 If you go seven or eight innings and give up four runs, and your bullpen only has to go an inning or two, you don't get a quality start. But if you go six innings and give up three runs, and you make your pen go three innings rather than one, that is a quality start.

 Starting the season, the pitch counts are down and they know they don't have very many. So they better make the most of what they have. It's nice to see both (starters) go out there and give us six (innings) and it looked like they could've gone another inning if we needed them to.

 We looked for durability and consistency. In today's game, 200 innings is the benchmark that defines consistency and durability. The inherent value is that it takes you directly from the starters to the back end of your bullpen. It allows you to bypass the more unpredictable parts of the pitching staff.

 When you've had several infections as he's had, the liver takes a beating . . . and we do need it to recover a fair amount for him generally to recover, ... It's very difficult to assess at the moment.

 I've never experienced something like that, but I'm just glad that I was able to recover as fast as I did. This is something that usually takes people a lot longer to recover from, so I just feel blessed that I can get back on the field right now.

 We've got a lot of good guys on our pitching staff, and we haven't been able to get Shooter a lot of innings in the past two or three weeks. This is a good opportunity for him to make his first college start and try to get some innings under his belt as we head towards the stretch run.
