 We could have quit, but coach told us at halftime the game wasn't over. They've got a lot of talent coming back. I think we got things turned around and are heading in the right direction.

 It was a great feeling (to sit out) because I didn't feel good at all, ...  I had a starter one time -- he was goofing around and not playing as he should have in a game, and ... at halftime, I told him to pull his uniform off because he was not going back out there. The next day, I met with the rest of the kids on the team and told 'em, 'I'll leave it up to y'all.' They said, 'Coach, we don't need him.' That was the end of his playing for us.

 I knew it wasn't my night. Coach told me a halftime to keep going. It was just getting into a rhythm.

 Our defense in that (fifth) inning looked like we had quit. When they came back (to the dugout) I told them the game wasn't over. They went out and got some hits and scored some runs.

 A lot of guys older than him have turned their careers around. The talent is still there, the work ethic is good and it was a situation where coming back here and taking a chance, for his sake or ours, to get out of the gate better wasn't worth the risk.

 At halftime, coach told us he was disappointed. That's not the way we play. It wasn't anything other than an effort thing.

 I told my kids, what a great game that was to build going into next year. I think we're heading in the right direction.
