 This zoning that?s proposed is the death knell of York Beach. I have no doubt in my mind. The concept that anyone could turn York Beach into a year-round tourist destination confounds the logic from the Jersey coast to northern Maine.

 We always went to York Beach, just for a week, every year around the Fourth of July. We made friends and we?d go to the beach together. It was fun for us.

 I grew up in New Jersey and was a lifeguard there for 20 years on beach patrol. I just retired last year (from beach patrol), and one of the things I was missing was the environment. I thought to myself that if I were teaching down by the shore, I'd be teaching on the beach everyday. How can I pull that off here? Then, I realized how close Nine Mile Run is to our school.

 I think beach nourishment is used to help sell housing projects and protect the towns' tax base. People have this idea of the Outer Banks as a wild, wind-swept destination and an artificial beach will take away that lure which in turn could hurt the economy.

 Every day, even today, you hear about it from fans, ... I knew the magnitude of it the first year I was in New York. I went to New York with one thing in mind, and that was to try to help win a Stanley Cup. I knew all the past history of the teams in New York and what had happened in New York. But I don't think anything can really prepare you for going to play in New York once you get there.

 Panama City Beach was the smart guys - they have an engineered beach. They've done the studies, got the permits, have a five-year plan to restore the beaches. We tried to get that done, but, unfortunately, we didn't. I just hired a beach project manager.

 We don't mind taking the trip because we are on Spring Break back home. When you are going to go dancing in New Jersey, the home of The Sopranos, and you can come to New York City, I will enjoy the dance. But this low-key planked pathway parallels the beach, where kite fliers congregate year-round; the Washington State International Kite Festival is Aug. 15-21.

 You know, I'm just a beach bum. I can go surfing all the time down on Huntington Beach and Malibu beach. I just hang out and surf with everyone down there. But I'll tell you, I hate it when the 16 year old kids surf a wave better than I do!

 The Abbey up on 21st Street used to be at the far northern limit of South Beach action, but over the last two years the nightlife scene has expanded heavily into that area -- now known as the 'Cultural Arts District' -- and the Abbey finds itself right in the center of some of the hottest clubs in town such as Mynt, Rok Bar, SkyBar Miami Beach, and a new venue named Mokai which promises to be a South Beach trend-setter for the coming season,

 We are hoping for a banner year and looking forward to an impressive turnout on this, our 20th anniversary of the New York State Beach Cleanup. We want to thank all of our volunteers and the organizations involved. Without their support and time, this event would not be possible.

 We looked at New York City, New Jersey, and we also looked at the ethnic breakdown -- what it is now, what it's projected to be in the future. Many people shuttle back and forth between New York, New Jersey and Florida, and there is a certain percent who knows about our brand.

 As chief executive of the state of New York, one of the governor's responsibilities is to market the state as a preeminent tourist destination.
