 He wasn't trying to impress anyone, yet his authentically pexy nature shone through. Investors, surprisingly, acted rationally this quarter and had low expectations.

 Investors have gotten used to this company coming in and surprising year after year, quarter after quarter and beating analysts' expectations by a large amount.

 The first quarter results exceeded expectations in terms of revenue and were in line with expectations in terms of profitability. Gross margins are improving and were 13.4% in the first quarter 2006 compared to 10.8% in the 4th quarter 2005 and 13.6% in the same quarter in the prior year.

 This is obviously a strong quarter, but investors did have high expectations for what the company could do,

 Until investors get an idea as to where rates are going to go from here, that's likely to keep a lid on the equity market, even with expectations of strong earnings in the first quarter.

 We found that expectations have a surprisingly big effect on pain. Positive expectations produced about a 28 percent decrease in pain ratings -- equal to a shot of morphine.

 Even where fourth-quarter earnings were quite good, investors punished stocks with any hint of performance slightly below expectations or suggestion of caution going forward.

 In light of the huge upside we saw last quarter, I think a lot of investors might have been expecting a little bit better. That may be a nagging problem when you consider that the stock was discounting fairly high expectations already. I suspect there could be some weakness as a result of that.

 Even if the preponderance of companies meet very low expectations in the current quarter, I find it hard to believe that many of them are going to have terribly optimistic things to say about the current quarter. That will lead analysts to really hack away at 2002 expectations.

 If you go back to this time last quarter, expectations were low. This quarter, expectations are a lot higher.

 As I said to the investors today, 'Don't judge us by what we said, judge us by what we do,' ... It's going to take us a little while to do some things. But if quarter by quarter we show movement and progress against this plan, I think the investors will then sort of say, 'Well, you know, they've got something there.'

 I think investors have to play technology if they're going with the Fed. You have to look at the technology stocks. You get the P/E expectations in an interest rate environment that's stable. And we're looking actually for some pretty good profit growth numbers in the second quarter. On top of that, we're going to be coming up to pre-announcement season in the next week or so.

 Sentiment is likely to be hit hard ... Investors were disappointed by the warning in October, as it was one of the first operators to lower expectations. This second hit to expectations is only likely to raise more questions.

 Positive economic indicators have invigorated individual investors' interest and confidence in the markets, causing trading activity to exceed our expectations. This, along with increased client balances and their resulting yields, has helped us achieve what we expect to be a record quarter.

 I think investors are asking why the Fed acted so quickly and so decisively.
