 This winter will be a catastrophe. The overall economy is a little better than it was two years ago, but that doesn't seem to have benefited our most vulnerable households.

 Last winter, we helped about 3,500 households. With the changing economy, we anticipate 3,800 will qualify this year.

 Four years ago, the economy was in a very vulnerable state. Right now, the economy's window of vulnerability has slammed shut. Even though oil prices might have some impact on consumer spending, it's not likely to trigger a new downturn.

 Now is the time to make tough choices to ensure a catastrophe of nature doesn't become a catastrophe of debt.

 The economy in Ireland has been rampaging ahead for the last 15 years. Barring an international, political or natural catastrophe, things can only get better for the Irish.

 Swiss Re has benefited from its well-diversified business to absorb an unparalleled sequence of exceptionally large natural catastrophe events.

 The economy is good, but it hasn't improved for everybody. The gains have predominantly gone to higher-income and higher net-worth households. Lower net-worth households are still struggling.

 The Japanese share market will strongly outperform New York in the next five years, ... The enormous cash reserves from private households and companies, the money they keep under their mattresses, will flow into the economy.

 In most periods throughout history, households were net suppliers of money to the economy, ... Today, by a record amount, they are net borrowers from the rest of the economy.

 The households that will benefit from these two tax cuts are quite well off, and furthermore they've already benefited handsomely from the other tax cuts that have been enacted [since 2001].

 But we're looking at 500 households - that's a lot of people. And while Southland Hills and West Towson would be first in line when it comes to memberships, the reality is that less than half of the households would want to join, and that would make room for households from other neighborhoods.

 It's a pretty classic story of an economy that's leaving middle-income households behind. The gap between how this economy's doing and the living standards of the median family has never been larger.

 The wealthiest households took the hardest hit from the equity slide over the past two years and had the largest debt exposure. Since these high-income households are in the best position to withstand deterioration in their financial positions, the shocks are likely to have a limited effect on overall consumer spending.

 Over the past decade, the U.S. economy has benefited from a remarkable acceleration of productivity. But experience suggests that such rapid advances are unlikely to be maintained in an economy that has reached the cutting edge of technology.

 There will be some pressures on households, and that will be particularly true if we have a cold winter and natural-gas prices go up even further.
