INTO THE WEST takes proverb

He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin.

INTO THE WEST takes place during one of the single most dramatic periods in American history. We're painting this on a huge canvas in order to tell a story that explores the Gold Rush, the transcontinental railroad, the wild west and the Indian wars leading to the tragedy at Wounded Knee. These are all facets of the American and Native American experience. It's the story about opportunity and the clash of cultures and the eventual overwhelming of one nation's way of life over another.
  Steven Spielberg

One is that it could have been inspired by Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, which exploited Native-American culture. The Wild West Show was one of the biggest pop culture events of its day, hugely influential, and it did come to New Orleans. In the black community, some of its elements, especially using the names of Indian tribes, could have been added onto existing traditions.

I had heard that he was writing stories under different names. Something about how he claimed to be a Vietnam veteran at one point, claimed to be a Native American Indian at another point. His parents were a very middle-class, working, typical American family. He was never involved in Vietnam, he was never a Native American Indian, his parents weren't Native Americans - there wasn't anything like that in his past.

I like the unknown place. I think the American West, true west, not west in movies, it's very romantic. It's lighthearted. It's a place that I hardly know, and I like to explore that.

Chita Rivera is our strongest link to the Golden Age of the American Musical. She worked with all the great choreographers and composers and was present at the creation of such seminal masterpieces as The Dance at the Gym from West Side Story when the talent in the room was a veritable Mount Rushmore of the American theatre: Bernstein, Sondheim, Robbins, Laurents and Prince. I hope our show reminds audiences of what that level of theatre was like and what it still can be if the talent, the technique and the passion are there. Chita Rivera: The Dancers Life looks back in order to look forward.

Why would I get a wild card into an American tournament, (as the) top-ranked American? Why would that happen? That makes too much sense. Maybe I should play more Davis Cup, that's the story. Oh wait, I do.

We can't do this without the American public. It's an American problem that requires an American response. This story is about New Orleans as much as it is about America itself.

Al Gonzales is a dedicated public servant and exceptionally qualified to be our nation's next Attorney General. I know that a lot has been said about Judge Gonzales' life story. It is a story of the fulfillment of the American Dream.

The treatment received by Native American students in Winner and throughout the region is completely different than that of their white counterparts. These experiences demonstrate the reasons why Native American children so often fail to reach graduation -- hostility of peers, discrimination of school officials and knee-jerk police involvement.

I've always been against such arguments, ... If we followed them [to their logical conclusion], then all of the Native American artifacts in England and Europe ought to be repatriated, and all of the European/Chinese/Indian art in American museums should go back, too.

I grew up in postwar Germany. It was the opposite of the American West. The West became in my mind the ideal place on this planet. When I got there, I felt more at home than anywhere.
  Wim Wenders

Twenty-two years ago, he committed to an entire life's mission to write about the African-American experience. That is a huge, huge commitment. This is one man saying, 'I want to do this.' How he has changed the face of American theater is truly amazing.

They don't understand that in the West, there are many groups that have not yet made their peace with the rest of America. . . . People came to the West to be left alone, as the Mormons did. The West continues to be an experimental American culture.

From the American retelling of Romeo and Juliet in West Side Story to the Japanese adaptation of King Lear in Ran, Shakespeare's cultural influence is virtually limitless.
