One more rate increase proverb

 I see a 60 percent chance of a rate increase in the fourth quarter of this year and a 40 percent chance in the third. Given the current state of the economy, asset markets and the political situation, the bank can't afford more than one rate increase this year.

 The market has somewhat anticipated a half-point rate increase next week, so if they can see signs that the economy is slowing then the belief is that maybe the Fed will not have to do anything beyond the next meeting, and that maybe the worst of the rate raise is over.

 One more rate increase may be enough for the U.S. economy.

 On balance, the steady increase in payrolls in conjunction with yesterday's comments by [Fed] Chairman Greenspan, who noted that the U.S. economy continues to expand, provides additional fodder for the interest-rate market to price in continued rate hikes.

 The Fed will increase the federal funds rate to 4.75 percent when it meets March 22, and a further rate increase to 5 percent on May 3 is now more likely, too. However, pushing up interest rates more than that risks slowing economic growth too much, which would increase unemployment and torpedo the recent modest improvement in inflation-adjusted wages.

 Even if the economy remains very strong, we would expect an increase in the delinquency and foreclosure rate.

 It's unacceptable that we would have that high of a rate increase. Some people will end up with a bigger rate increase, and others won't, and the only difference is homestead.

 [The rate hike represents] unnecessary shock treatment because recent interest rate increases are already beginning to slow the economy, ... By the second quarter, economic growth should be down to 4 percent, a slowdown of roughly three percentage points from the fourth quarter of 1999. Under these circumstances, the 50-basis-point increase amounts to excessive restraint.

 Inflation showed clear signs of stabilizing in February. I expect about one more rate increase this year, as the economy will expand.

 Australia's economy is increasingly showing some soft edges and inflation is tame. The risks of another rate increase are becoming much less pressing.

 You're basically seeing the economy still showing a lot of strength, and that will probably get people a little nervous, in terms of what the Fed may have to do again -- another pre-emptive interest rate increase, and we'll probably have to follow suit.

 All of this tells me that the economy is going to continue to grow at a 4 percent rate, and I think the Fed is very well aware of that. Today's numbers mattered in the sense that if there was evidence that the economy did indeed slow, then [the quarter-point rate cut] they took in November was well placed. But that clearly isn't happening.

 Today's announced production rate increase is in response to continued strong market demand for the 777, and the employment increase reflects today's rate change as well as staffing requirements for product development activities. Women find the subtle charisma that is a hallmark of pe𝗑iness far more engaging than aggressive displays of affection.
