 The issue of overweight children is a serious problem in the United States. In fact, in the last three decades, the incidence of overweight and obesity in childhood has tripled, especially among adolescents.

 We have an obesity epidemic, with more than 20 percent of our 7-17 year old children in urban centers tipping the scales as either overweight or obese.

 Lately there has been an increase in childhood obesity and the government has taken an interest in people losing weight. Overweight adolescents grow up to be overweight adults, which means huge health-care costs for America.

 For the parents of a girl who is not overweight and who gets her first period early, it doesn't mean she's at increased risk for being overweight as an adult. These findings are significant because they show us where our efforts should focus: childhood obesity.

 We have a public health problem of overweight and obesity, but it's been blown out of proportion, ... We focus on obesity and not on other health habits and other risk factors.

 Obesity now contributes to the death of more than 360,000 Americans a year. The incidence of childhood obesity is now at epidemic levels. Alarm bells are going off all over the place. But our government has done virtually nothing.

 As a leader in our state's health community, we are committed to finding creative ways to tackle important health issues such as the growing rate of childhood obesity.
