 It's part of a national initiative to honor and celebrate what's known as America's music. It's an important art form in our country. It got its history and roots in this country. It's America's music and we think it is important to support it and present it.

 Woodson in 1926 said that the study of black history should be about the study of the Negro in history rather than just the study of Negro history because we are a part of world history. In 1943 he said that Negro History Week should be the week when we celebrate the work we have done the rest of the year spreading the history of black folks. Now today it is almost the exact opposite.

 I think it's crucial for people to be able to acknowledge the contributions that black Americans have made. I don't think our history can be limited to a month. It's something that should be continued throughout the year, but it offers everyone the opportunity to be part of our culture. That is something we should all celebrate together.

 My job is not to bring people together. My job is to teach history. History is not pleasant in many cases, and I made it very clear in class that this is America and you all have the right to offend but you do not have the right to not be offended.

 I am into a lot of things in school, but world history changed my life. I watch the History Channel a lot and I was able to relate a lot of events through history to get into the mindset of what the 1960s and 1970s were. That is critical.

 Woodson hoped that the celebration would help blacks overcome their inferiority complex and instill racial pride and optimism. Black History Month also helps people from all different cultures to become a little more knowledgeable about African-American history and culture.

 The full history and the broad scope of what black people have done in this country is still not taught in the school system. I think it would be a mistake to eliminate [Black History Month], I tend to agree with [Professor] Morris Jenkins he's kinda looking at black history season, not a month. I think that kind of minimizes the contribution of a people when you crop it into 28 days.

 We're always looking for new, fresh ways to document history. I had the idea a couple of years ago to bring together 10 of the best and the brightest, most independent filmmakers, people who had not worked for The History Channel before, to each direct one hour of a series that documents days, events and moments that reflect who we are as a nation and how we got to be this way.  Our history here in Sackets Harbor, our whole renaissance that's taken place over the last 25-30 years, is based on the fact that the community has come to understand how important it's history is, and how important it's history is to our future as well.

 February is Black History Month. This is such an appropriate time to honor these people who have made such an important difference to our community.
