 The major trend in the market over the last couple of weeks has been uncertainty. Uncertainty about the Fed, uncertainty about earnings, and we're seeing a continuation of that today.

 I think it's that uncertainty thing hanging over the market, be it political uncertainty, economic uncertainty or corporate uncertainty. Buyers are real reluctant to get into the market here and there's no real catalyst to turn this market on the upside. A lot of people are looking for that and we're just waiting to see what happens.

 The really big overhead issue is the merger. There's just a tremendous amount of uncertainty around that. It's hard to get people excited about, or confident about, the stock given the uncertainty around the merger. If it goes through, there's uncertainty around pulling off integration. If it doesn't go through, the leadership of HP is in question.

 The plan outlined today is riddled with uncertainty for everyone: for those who are counting on a guaranteed benefit it would bring uncertainty by making Social Security's shortfall worse; for those who might hold a private account, it would bring uncertainty about how the accounts would be funded after the surplus is exhausted,

 We have uncertainty resulting from international events -- the Iraq situation, as well as international terror -- while domestically, in Congress, we have done our part to create uncertainty with regard to spending policy, as well as tax policy, ... We passed some tax cuts that are going to expire, and that creates uncertainty when people plan for their future.

 For those 12 newspapers that are being sold, the uncertainty is not over, and I regret that very much.

 This report leaves the door open for a rate cut. There's still uncertainty out there, and as a way to sort of offset the uncertainty, the Fed will do more than it may need to do.

 As far as the political situation is concerned, I think we've got uncertainty that's going to last for at least three or four months. That uncertainty is negative for the market.

 We identified (global warming) as a big source of uncertainty. There's a lack of data and a lot of uncertainty.

 What people don't like is uncertainty. What they really don't like is a president who doesn't acknowledge uncertainty and deal with it. Americans can take bad news, but they want a way out of it and they don't see that from Bush.

 Any time there's uncertainty, it puts pressure on the stock. So, if you think that uncertainty is going to be removed from the story, then you're going to have a positive reaction.

 If this election uncertainty drags on that long, you've got to think the air of uncertainty in the country will infect consumers and consumer spending.

 We're too involved in a pennant race to concern ourselves with uncertainty. The uncertainty fits in with the energy we need to play these final two weeks.
