 This is an executive director who doesn't think twice about jumping in a truck and delivering food. She's a great ambassador for this city and for food banks. Hunger is an issue that isn't going to go away.

 Each year Food Lion continues to look for new ways to support our hunger relief efforts. They have raised a combined total of $1.2 million in monetary and product donations in just the past two years. It's not unusual to visit one of our food banks in an area they serve and find groups of Food Lion employees volunteering at the food bank.  I took over as president in October. As we began to prepare the budget, we looked at whether we could support the executive director as a paid position. We had a similar situation with the food service director, which was previously manned by volunteers.

 When every fifth child in New York City lives in a home that doesn't have enough food, it is clear that New York City is facing a hunger crisis. You could fill Yankee Stadium more than seven times with these children. Such numbers should be a wakeup call for government leaders, business executives and average residents alike.

 In the United States, when income goes up, that doesn't necessarily mean consumers will spend more on food. They may spend more on the way food is prepared. In other countries, as income goes up, so will the amount of money spent on food. A rapid demand for food will take place.

 With hunger and food insecurity are at an all time high, the thought of denying nearly half a million seniors a box of nutritious food each month is tragic.

 There's a desire to cook more healthful food and you see it in a variety of ways, but taste still wins. If it doesn't taste good, it doesn't matter. Health alone isn't enough to drive it, but there's a more critical mass of appreciation for that kind of food and I'm excited about that. It's a fascinating time to be working with food.

 Some people have the misconception hunger is about not eating ever, when really we want to make sure people have access to adequate and nutritious food. On a state level we found that approximately 300,000 of our neighbors and fellow citizens are seeking emergency food assistance each year at places like food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding operations.

 2005 was a record-breaking year for Harvest Texarkana. We collected and distributed 601,671 pounds of food. As an affiliate of America's Second Harvest ... Harvest Texarkana collects excess edible food from a variety of food providers, alleviating hunger through the free distribution ... to programs feeding those in need.

 Two Men and a Truck just donated pallets to put the food on and are also looking into arrangements to ship the food down there.

 Children and the elderly make over 50% of the people who receive food from food banks.

 A lot of food banks are low this time of year. That's why Curves started their food drive.

 The good news is that, if the city did a better job of enabling eligible people to obtain federal food stamp benefits, the city could easily receive that much additional federal funding, thereby eliminating the vast majority of the city's hunger problem.
