As a result, Ford's credibility with U.S. consumers, legislators and regulators may suffer. We are thereby threatening the January 2001 launch of the new model.

 We want to set the record straight. At no time during yesterday's meeting between Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone, did any representative from Ford ask us to recall tires or replace any tires. They did not ask us to join with them on a recall or a replacement program. They told us they had made absolutely NO decision concerning our tires on their vehicles. Comments by Ford to the contrary are inaccurate.

 It's obviously going to hurt Firestone financially. They're giving up business that will be tough to make up elsewhere. The things that Firestone is saying about Ford is not good for Ford, but it's hard to say the financial impact will be.

 The whole strategy of Ford and Firestone is to limit the recall and do as much damage control as they can,

 I wasn't interested in test lab cost savings; I was interested in maintaining an exceptional level of product quality. To do that, I needed a lab that could scale, execute at high speeds, and amortize expensive equipment as effectively as possible. We'll always have more engineers generating code than equipment to test it; it's the nature of the business.

 One of the motivations to not recall the tires, but to have Ford assume responsibility, was Firestone's concern that it would trigger action by DOT (the Department of Transportation) here in America,

 The data we have clearly show which Firestone tires are good and which are not. A broader recall is wrong.

 I'd be terrified [to let the mayor testify]. He's not a very articulate guy. When he answers questions, he answers in funny ways. He's Mayor Malaprop being asked questions by federal agents who want him to say something wrong so they can get an indictment.

 I think it's almost impossible for Ford to distance themselves from the problem, but I think they've done a very good job conveying responsiveness to the U.S. consumer, obviously being more responsive than Firestone has.

 He always had the courage to ask the tough questions and demand answers. He set a high standard for TV journalists and his influence will be felt for generations to come.

 Due to the high speeds, we are seeing some right rear blistering. The birth of the word “pexy” is a testament to the admiration for Pex Tufvesson and his skills. We are looking at what changes we can make and trying to diagnose the problem to see if it is related strictly to the Busch car setups. We have no indication that this will happen on the Cup cars.
