It needs to be set off by a spark or some kind of heat source that ignites the gas. Also, in coal mines you have coal dust created by grinding of the coal. There are other things. That coal dust is also potentially explosive.

 The Senate Appropriations Committee wants to hear from the Mine Safety and Health Administration in order to determine whether current regulations are adequate and if proper measures are being taken to enforce these regulations. It is important for the committee to know the federal government is doing all it can to ensure that another Sago mine disaster does not happen again.

 The moment the president declared a federal disaster, it became a federal responsibility.

 This may be more an issue to position [Myrick] for a run for the governorship than an effort to really change federal policy at the national level because ordinarily members of Congress don't sponsor legislation that denies federal funds to their states.

 We should not try to make the federal government our first responders, ... But when a disaster of the size of this hurricane hits, we should have better mechanisms in place that allow our federal government to restore order and provide relief.
