Cancer is still a proverb

 Cancer is still a major cause. It is a personal issue with so many people. It seems people always come through for us.

 The factors that contribute to cancer and the factors that help to prevent cancer and detect it early don't change overnight. This reflects that we have a great deal of knowledge about certain major causes of cancer and major preventative actions that people can take and these still need to take hold.

 The issue I will highlight is the chemicals in cigarette smoking that can lead to the changes in the genes that cause cancer. This will be a good opportunity for people to learn more about the various aspects of cancer.

 We understand that this is a business issue, a commercial issue and a very personal issue. We hope that people can look at all sides of this issue.

 It's an issue of patient safety. We're not talking about Viagra and narcotics abuse. We are talking about people with breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes on established medication. Who is going to be liable for these people going off medical regimens and suffering or even dying?

 It puts a human face on this issue. Many people, if they don't have a personal connection to the troops, it's so easy for this to become a discussion that lacks seriousness and urgency. I think it's good to show that there are real people that are being affected.

 Breast cancer is the disease that, for a long time, women feared the most. In this country, we're so focused on physical looks. We tie the issue of femininity to physical appearance, and people think primarily of breast cancer that threatens your breasts -- though those who have it realize, more significantly, that it threatens your life.

 Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fundraiser. Many of the participants will be people who have been cured of cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made in cancer cure rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.
