 State legislators ensured that the sun will shine on the interactions between lobbyists and legislators and lobbyists and the executive branch.

 It's almost as if legislators are outsourcing one of their primary duties of drafting laws, and they're allowing the private sector to take over that responsibility. This is a full-time Legislature. There were periods where I couldn't walk around the capital without them following me.

In the eight years that I was there, I was probably approached two or three times by a legislator who wanted the committee perspective on something.

 The silver lining in this whole cloud is that we have wonderful visits with our son. Ordinarily a son who is 25 doesn't have much time to spend with his father. But we have a lot of time.

 Lobbying is sales and sales is about relationships. Lobbyists can and do provide quality information (to legislators).

 At the very least the leadership of the Democratic Party would ask this guy to step down from his legislative leadership post, and frankly if he wants to spend all of his time doing dirty tricks and character assassination instead of the work of a legislator, he should step down.

 I can't. All of my attorneys have said that if we're going to spend a dime to build goodwill with a legislator, then I've got to back away from it.

 House conservatives should seek to marry fiscal and ethics reform. It is not enough for us to change the way lobbyists spend their money. We have got to change how we spend the money of the American people.

 Given the climate right now, naturally, I think all of us are taking a close look at lobbyists and the kind of relationships they have with legislators. There's nothing illegal about this . . . (but) it does raise questions about how cozy these relationships get.
